FFV Sleep status

Lenna under Sleep in Final Fantasy V.

Sleep (スリプル, Suripuru? or 睡眠, Suimin?), also known as Psyche or Slep, is a recurring status effect in the Final Fantasy series. It is also the name of a spell, usually available through Black Magic, that will induce this effect; although later games have re-classified the spell as Green or Arcane magic. A character who is hit by a sleep-inducing attack will be rendered unable to act for the duration of the sleep effect. These attacks have in the past take the form of Pollen, dust, a spell, or a Bard's lullaby.

Sleep generally does not last a great period of time and will wear off if a character is either cured (for example, by use of Esuna or a Remedy) or physically damaged, meaning that magic attacks can still be used without risk of waking up the target. Inflicting other status ailments and any associated damage that occurs as a result of the ailment (for example, Poison) generally do not wake the targets either.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy[]

FF1-PSP-sleep

Sleep renders a unit unable to act. While physically attacking the afflicted unit will not wake them up, there is a chance of recovery at the end of each turn and does not last after battle. The only way the party can inflict Sleep is through the use of the spells Sleep and Sleepra, while the enemies Mummy and King Mummy can inflict it through their physical attacks.

Final Fantasy II[]

Sleep renders a unit unable to act. While physically attacking the afflicted unit will not wake them up, there is a chance of recovery at the end of each turn and does not last after battle. It can be cured with Basuna at level 2 or higher.

Mesmerize Summon/Shiva Inflicts Sleep to all enemies.

In addition, the enemies Queen Lamia, Dracrocotta, and Demon Horse can inflict Sleep by physically attacking.

Final Fantasy IV[]

FFIVDS Sleep Status Icon

A unit cannot act until the status is cured or wears off. The status wears off more quickly with higher Spirit. Haste also speeds recovery, while Slow delays it. Sleep always wears off after combat.

Few abilities inflict Sleep. The only enemy ability that inflicts Sleep is Sleeping Gas, while the only ways for the party to inflict Sleep are either through attacking with the Dream Harp or Sleep Sword, using the Bardsong Lullaby, or the Black Magic spell Sleep.

Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-[]

The Sleep status returns as a status effect and it functions the same way as its predecessor.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years[]

Few abilities inflict Sleep either from enemies and allies. The Black Magic spell Sleep and the weapons Cat Claws, Dream Harp, and Sleep Blade can be utilized to inflict Sleep on the enemy, while enemies only have access to Sleep and the ability Slap to inflict the status on the player.

Edward can inflict Sleep on opponents by his Lullaby song, performed randomly from his Bardsong command when targeting enemies.

Final Fantasy V[]

Sleeping targets cannot act nor evade nor cover for allies. The duration of sleep depends on the attack setting it. Sleepers awaken when taking physical damage, but not from magical damage. The Samurai's Mineuchi ability can be used to substitute for the regular Fight command, but it does not remove an opponent's sleep status, like a regular attack would. The player can inflict it with the Sleep spell and Spellblade, the Time Slip Blue Magic as well as certain weapons.

Final Fantasy VI[]

The affected character(s) cannot take any action or evade, and the character's ATB bar stops. Sleep can be removed with any physical damage that hits the afflicted. If Sleep lasts long enough, a tapir will automatically appear and remove the status. The status is also removed at the end of battle and with various status-healing items and spells. Sleeping characters are crouched over, with Z's above their head.

Final Fantasy VII[]

Sleep is a status in Final Fantasy VII. Sleeping units cannot act until awoken although their ATB is not frozen. They are vulnerable to magic damage as it does not wake them, but being hit by a physical attack removes the status. The player has numerous ways of inflicting the status, including the Sleepel spell and the Frog Song E.Skill.

Final Fantasy VII Remake[]

Toad FFVThis section about a status effect in Final Fantasy VII Remake is empty or needs to be expanded. You can help the Final Fantasy Wiki by expanding it.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth[]

Sleep renders a unit unable to act or evade until awoken or the status wears off. It is applied with Sleep Sleep from the Binding Materia Binding Materia, randomly from the Rancid Breath enemy skill, and by certain enemy abilities. Sleep is cured via being hit with physical damage, Remedy, and Esuna Esuna, and can be mitigated/avoided with Resist, Warding Materia Warding Materia, Headband, and Ribbon.

Final Fantasy VIII[]

FFVIII Sleep Symbol

Sleep prevents the afflicted from acting until it wears off or is healed. Evasion is not reduced, so it is possible to avoid attacks while sleeping. While induced with Sleep, the effects and durations of other statuses are paused. The effect lasts approximately 13.3 seconds, and will end if a target is struck physically, whether it hits. The player can inflict it with Sleep (via Magic, Slot, Angel Wing, or ST-Atk-J), status-inflicting Limit Breaks, and Doomtrain.

Final Fantasy IX[]

FFIX Sleep Symbol

Sleepers are unable to act or evade. The sleeping unit's ATB gauge will still charge, and if a command is issued but the unit is put to sleep before taking that command, the command is canceled and their ATB gauge is reset. The player can use Sleep with Sleep and Night spells, and with weapons that have it as an innate trait. Removed if hit by physical attacks or with Esuna, or until it runs out. Physical attacks deal x1.5 damage to the sleeping target. The player can protect against it with Insomniac.

Final Fantasy X[]

Sleep lasts for a specific number of turns depending on the attack that causes the status. Physical and magic attacks against sleeping units inflict 50% more damage than normal. Sleeping enemies cannot be bribed. The player can inflict Sleep onto enemies with Sleep Attack skill and Sleeptouch weapon ability, among other methods, and protect against it with Sleep Ward and Sleepproof.

The player can inflict it by reading the Bedtime Tale folio or through the Songstress's ability Lullaby. The auto-ability Sleepproof makes the character immune to the status.

Some enemies can spawn with the status already in place, such as the Shield Wyrm, Black Chocobo, and Pumpkin Head. Sleeping party members can be used to trigger the Immobilize glitch. The player can use Sleep and Sleepga spells to inflict enemies.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings[]

RW Sleep Status Symbol

The Sleep status causes a unit to become temporarily unconscious until it is damaged by an attack or after a period of time. However, it the unit is struck by an attack that causes Sleep while it is asleep, he will not wake up. The timer of the unit remaining asleep will, however, not reset.

Diabolos's attack, Nightmare, inflicts Sleep and deals damage to one foe. Fran has an ability called Sleep Arrow that adds the ability to inflict Sleep to her attacks for fifteen seconds.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

The Sleep status renders an enemy completely inactive as long as it is not damaged. Abilities that do not inflict direct damage will not wake sleeping enemies. The Sleep and Repose role actions learned by magic ranged DPS and healers respectively can inflict Sleep, while a Blue Mage's Acorn Bomb and Chirp spells can also inflict it.

Final Fantasy Tactics[]

FFT Sleep Status Symbol

When inflicted with Sleep it is signified by a dialogue balloon with 'ZZZ' above character's head. The unit's CT stops incrementing and any characters attacking a sleeping unit will receive a PA bonus (new PA = [PA * 3/2]). Sleeping units cannot evade or use reaction abilities (including Blade Grasp and Abandon, which will be inactive while a character is asleep). Sleeping characters are immune to Speechcraft. Sleep lasts for 60 ticks.

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord[]

Sleep can be added with Templar's Sleep, a Mystic's Repose, Will-o'-the-Wisp, Forbidden Dance, Bad Breath, Dark Whisper, Sleep Touch, Toot, Grand Cross, Nightmare, and Sleepja.

Protect Ring, Grand Helmet, Barette and Ribbon can all be equipped to prevent Sleep.

Units affected with sleep will skip their turns until after some time or until they are damaged, which includes poison. Their Evasion is reduced to 0 and any abilities as well as status ailments are sure to hit them unless they are immune to them.
