Sleep is a status in Final Fantasy. It is primarily associated with the Spirit element.

Content in italics is exclusive to the Dawn of Souls and/or 20th Anniversary releases.

Mechanics[]

Sleep incapacitates the target, preventing them from taking any action. It additionally nullifies their Evasion and increases the Attack of entities attacking the victim by 50% (25% in NES). Targets afflicted with Sleep may awake randomly at the end of each round and automatically recover at the end of battle.

Random recovery from Sleep is determined by (R = 0...80) if R is less than the victim's max HP, rendering Sleep significantly less effective after the early game when both player characters and enemies can easily have more than 80 HP. In the NES release, Sleep is bugged such that enemies will always immediately recover, regardless of their HP.

As with other statuses, it is only possible to be immune to the Sleep condition in the Pixel Remaster release; in prior releases, the most one can do is resist the element of an attack that inflicts the status, reducing its accuracy. Even if a target is listed as resisting Sleep, this is in reference to the element, rather than effects that can inflict Sleep.
