An assassin able to bend the laws of nature by speaking the words of forbidden Sky Mantra.

Description

Skyseer, also known as Heaven Knight, is a special job in Final Fantasy Tactics exclusive to Rapha. The Skyseer is a magickal job like the Netherseer, but unlike standard magick, it ignores Faith. It uses powerful but random strikes to take down enemies. In the original version, it costs 3,000 JP to master. In The War of the Lions, it requires 3050 JP.

Abilities[]

Sky Mantra[]

Skyseer job command. Attacks with a power that does not rely upon faith.

Description

Sky Mantra attacks do not take Rapha's Faith or enemy Faith into consideration, unlike most magick attacks.

On the original PlayStation version, each cast randomly makes 1–6 strikes within the area of effect. A strike can strike an empty tile.

In The War of the Lions versions, the spells are improved:

  • Damage was increased.
  • Each cast has 1–10 strikes.
  • The number of strikes is biased toward the average: 5% for 1, 2, 9, or 10 strikes; 10% for 3, 4, 7, or 8; 20% for 5 or 6.
  • Each strike has a >50% chance of striking the center tile.

Celestial Void.

The Skyseer is a magick-based special job focused on dealing elemental damage in an area at no MP cost, which ignores Faith and target's Reflect. It has balanced stats, not excelling at any attribute. Its Sky Mantra is unique as it is magickal abilities are the only ones in the game, other than the Netherseer's Nether Mantra, capable of hitting multiple times, although at random. Rapha is the only playable Skyseer (should the player recruit her).

The Skyseer is offset by its average stats (except high speed) and most importantly, inconsistent damage output from Sky Mantra's abilities, as they strike randomly within the reticle's tiles; to get the most of these abilities, enemies must be clustered to increase the chance of hitting them, or isolated on a narrow or elevated area that restricts the 3 tile vertical height range.

Celestial Void should be avoided in that it does less damage (with no elemental absorption/enhancements) than the other Sky Mantra abilities and does not guarantee a status effect (blind, silence, and poison are useless vs most enemies) should the random attack hit the enemy. Parry can bypass the low Bravery not triggering reaction abilities, though this will allow Treasure Hunter to get more rares.

The Skyseer can be equipped with various equipment pieces (Gaia Gear strengthens Divinity while absorbing its earth element, and Chantage allows Rapha to be indestructible) to augment its magickal attack, to make sure every hit counts. Black Mage's Arcane Strength support ability is particularly effective as it allows Rapha to do more damage and use another type of magick for versatility (Black Mage may offer higher magick attack, but is slower than the Skyseer in spells, JP costs, and speed while having some difficulty vs shields and low Faith enemies).

Etymology[]

The Japanese names of the skills are Buddhist or Hindu in origin.

  • 天鼓雷音: Dundubhi, Devadundubhi, or Dundubhi-ishvara
  • 阿修羅: Asura
  • 金剛七剣: Vajra (diamond, adamantine, lightning) Seven Swords
  • 水磨龍穴: Unknown reference. Its chant makes a reference to "demon(ic) rakshasa" (悪鬼羅刹).
  • 大虚空蔵: Great Ākāśagarbha
  • 天魔鬼神 (tenma kishin): Uncertain. "Tenma" (天魔) is the Japanese term for Mara. "Kishin" (鬼神) is a Chinese term for ghosts or spirits, and a Japanese term for demons, but may also be Japanese for the Buddhist concept of fierce deities, or super-powered beings. Possibly "Mara Krodha".
