Bartz before Siren appears
Field sprite.

Siren is a boss in Final Fantasy V. She deceives the party into letting their guard down to steal their souls by impersonating Bartz's mother, Stella Klauser, and King Tycoon, but her attempt to ensnare Galuf by impersonating Krile fails when Galuf cannot remember her due to his amnesia. Galuf snaps the other party members out of their trances, and the Siren takes a more direct approach to taking care of the party.

In the Advance, mobile and Steam versions, Siren can also be fought in the Cloister of the Dead section of the Sealed Temple.

Battle

Siren switches between Alive and Undead statuses at will. While Alive, she is weak to physical attacks, but elemental attacks are ineffective.

FFV Sleep

Sleep.

When Alive, she will use Blizzard while trying to put the party to sleep and silence them. She will cast Haste on herself and try to cast Slow on the party. She will heal herself occasionally.

While Undead, Siren resists physical damage, but is weak to magic, especially Fire and curative spells. Despite her Undead status, using a Phoenix Down on her will not kill her. Siren will physically attack the party for some heavy damage. She also has a Poison spell.

When she shifts back to human after changing to the Undead once, she loses her resistance to magic, and seems to have reduced spell damage and physical damage, and defense, in all forms. Whether this was intended or not, it acts like a misconfigured code.

Siren might also waste a turn using Libra.

Strategy

When Siren is Alive, the player should use physical fighters to focus on attacking her. When Siren is Undead, Fire is the best offensive option. While White Mages can damage her with Cure in her Undead state, it may be best to focus on healing due to her strong physical attacks. An effective strategy is to have physical fighters with Black Lv.1 to inflict maximum damage regardless of Siren's current state. Otherwise, the player can have their physical fighters use Potions on her while Undead for 50 damage each.

If the player learned the Blue Magic spell Goblin Punch and also kept characters at level 2, Goblin Punch is the strongest ability available against Siren, regardless of her form.

Target Score
  • Defeat Siren before she turns undead
Strategy

As if ripped straight from her source material, Siren should offer little challenge if the player can time her transformations. In living form, she is fairly resistant to magic; in undead form, she resists most physical attacks. No matter which form she's in, her intent is the same: to make the party suffer as many status attacks as possible. Meanwhile, the party's mages can quickly put an end to Siren with Fire and Cure magic while undead. This battle also has a completely missable Target Score, so if the party doesn't nail this dungeon down on the first pass, replay it when the party has a bit more experience.

Etymology

Sirens are from Greek mythology. In the story of Odysseus, the Sirens are beautiful women who lure sailors with their voices. Odysseus escaped the Sirens by having all his sailors plug their ears with beeswax. He was curious as to what the Sirens sounded like, so he let himself be tied to the mast to ensure he could not fall victim to their voices.
