Flute with a siren's power dwelling inside.

Description

Siren's Flute is a weapon for Eiko in Final Fantasy IX, being the penultimate flute. It is available in the endgame, and so the player may have already mastered the abilities it holds: Full-Life, the best revival spell; Dispel, which removes positive statuses from a target as well as Slow and Stop; and Esuna, which heals status ailments from a target.

Obtain[]

Siren's Flute is available to buy for 7000 gil in Black Mage Village in the endgame. It is also stolen from Lich in the final dungeon.

Mechanics[]

Siren's Flute's damage dealt with a normal Attack is determined as follows everywhere but within Ipsen's Castle:

Base = 30 - Enemy's Defense
Bonus = Strength + Rnd MOD ([(Level + Strength) / 8] + 1)
Damage = Base * Bonus

Where Rnd means a random number, while MOD means modulus operation. "Rnd MOD x" can be read as a random number between 0 and x-1.

The damage is then modified by variables like Eiko's row position and the enemy's Protect. Under Mini, her Bonus would be 1. If Eiko equips Healer, damage is converted to healing.

When in Ipsen's Castle, the stronger weapons do less damage than weaker weapons, and the Base part of the damage formula is altered to:

Base = 30 - Enemy's Defense

Use[]

Siren's Flute is not Eiko's strongest weapon when it first becomes available, if the player got the Tiger Racket at the earliest, and the Priest's Racket is also available concurrently with Siren's Flute, and is stronger. Rackets are also superior physical weapons for Eiko over flutes for dealing full damage form the back row, and their Wind-elemental property being a benefit more often that it is a detriment. However, as Eiko is not a physical attacker, the Attack values of her weapons are less relevant than the abilities they teach her. If Eiko already knows the spells Siren's Flute can teach, the player can skip buying it.

Etymology[]

Most of Eiko's weapons are named after a magical being of some sort. Sirens are from Greek mythology. In the story of Odysseus, the Sirens are beautiful women who lure sailors with their voices. Odysseus escaped the Sirens by having all his sailors plug their ears with beeswax. He was curious as to what the Sirens sounded like, so he let himself be tied to the mast to ensure he could not fall victim to their voices.
