Etymology and origin[]

Silver is a chemical element with the chemical symbol Ag and atomic number 47. A soft, white, lustrous transition metal, it possesses the highest electrical conductivity of any element and the highest thermal conductivity of any metal.

Silver often carries connotations of "second-best", especially when contrasted with gold.

In Japanese, the gun is actually a "BB gun", a kind of air gun that uses special spherical ammunition known as BBs, being short for either ball bearing (not made to the size of actual ball bearings, which are used in rotating parts in furniture or tools) or ball bullet, and is propelled with compressed air or gas by the gun's mechanics. BB guns are valued as a hobby due to their less lethal and legally relaxed nature, but are sometimes used to deter or remove invasive pests like rodents, and gun safety still must be maintained and practiced to lessen the risk of injury and harm. BB guns often take after real world model weapons or sometimes promotional and recreations of weapons from popular media like video games and movies.

The weapon's appearance in Final Fantasy VII as the Silver Rifle takes after rarer fantastical retro BB guns from the early 20th century during the 1930s and 1950s, appearing to take after blaster gun toys from the sci-fi series Buck Rogers In The 25th Century.
