The Silver M-phone (also known as the Silver M-Phone[1]) is a weapon for Cait Sith in Final Fantasy VII. It is found at the Mansion, and has eight unlinked Materia slots, but fairly low stats.
As with other Cait Sith weapons, the Silver M-phone itself does not strike an enemy, but commands his Mog, meaning Cait Sith's damage is still Hit rather than Shout. However, its Attack stat still counts towards damage dealt.
Obtained[]
The Silver M-phone is found in the Foyer in the Mansion at Nibelheim, earliest obtained during "Unnatural Hometown".
Mechanics[]
As the Silver M-phone has a base Attack stat bonus of 28, the base damage for physical attacks when the Silver M-phone equipped is in the following formula:
where "Level" is Cait Sith's current level and "Strength" is his Strength stat. The Silver M-phone also has an Attack% (Accuracy) of 106%, and grants a +14 bonus to Cait Sith's Magic stat.
Use[]
The Silver M-phone is available for Cait Sith early on, upon reaching Nibelheim. In terms of pure stats, it is outclassed by his Green M-phone which was already available from Cosmo Canyon, as well as a few other weapons before acquiring the Highwind (such as the Blue M-phone, Red M-phone, and Crystal M-phone). What makes it a worthy choice is having eight Materia slots, the maximum number of slots for a weapon, and is Cait Sith's only such weapon until after the player has the Highwind.
Since all the Silver M-phone's slots are unlinked, they should be given to a variety of Magic and Summon Materia, as well as some Independent Materia. Cait Sith has one of the best Magic stats in the game, and his physical damage is fairly unreliable, meaning that he is best played as a spellcaster. This means giving him a wide variety of Materia that not only boosts his Magic stat further, but plays to his strength and allows him to be both an offensive and defensive spellcaster. Though the inability to pair his slots with All can hurt him, Cait Sith can still use armor for a linked Materia slot. The Enemy Skill Materia is also useful on Cait Sith to take advantage of his Magic stat.
Due to Cait Sith's preferred playstyle as a mage, the Silver M-phone is arguably his best weapon before the player has the Highwind. Though his other weapons are more well-rounded, the Silver M-phone's number of slots plays better into Cait Sith's playstyle as he will rarely be using physical attacks anyway. After the Highwind is obtained, the Silver M-phone is made redundant due to the Gold M-phone, which not only has better stats, but all of its eight slots are linked.
