Causes silence.
Description
Silence, also known as Mute, is a White Magic spell in Final Fantasy V. It has a chance to inflict the silence effect on one target or an entire party, preventing them from casting spells. Silence is usable by the White Magic and Red Magic skillsets (and can be used twice with Dualcast). Silence is also one of the spells that can be cast for free from the Wonder Wand. Magic Bow and Mage Masher have a 33% chance to cast Silence when attacked with.
Silence is also an enemy ability that can be used by Fury, Omniscient, and Siren.
Obtained[]
Silence can be purchased for 280 gil at Carwen, Karnak, or Jachol. Carwen is the earliest place Silence can be obtained. Once it is purchased, it can be used by any of the skillsets with the spell.
Mechanics[]
Silence's chance to hit is as follows:
If the target has shell, or the spell is multi-targeted, the Spell Hit% is halved. If the target is a toad, its Evade % is reduced to 0.
The game generates two random numbers between 0 and 99.
- If N1 >= Hit%, the spell misses
- If N2 < Evade%, the spell misses
Silence can be reflected.
Use[]
Silence is an inexpensive and somewhat effective debuff. Against enemies that rely on spellcasting to deal damage, Silence can be an effective way to remove their main source of damage for a small MP cost. Some larger enemies and bosses are immune.
Silence's main strength is its low MP cost, as some other spells have a similar effect with a higher chance to hit. The spells Toad and Berserk both prevent an enemy from spellcasting, but have a higher chance to apply. Other negative status spells, such as Stop and Confuse, can accomplish a greater negative effect, but also have a higher MP cost.
As well as Silence, the Time Magic spell Mute has a similar effect, inflicting silence on all units in the battle that are not immune, but is guaranteed to apply and has no hit rate. This means that all enemies are silenced, but so is the player's party. Mute can be used if the player is not affected by silence, as it is guaranteed.
