Shiva FFVIIR

Shiva's appearance in Final Fantasy VII Remake.

The empress of ice, wreathed in frost. She is known for her signature move, 'Diamond Dust', which freezes everything in an instant.

Dissidia Final Fantasy Summon Compendium

Shiva (シヴァ, Shiva?) is a frequently recurring Ice-elemental summon. A blue-skinned woman with clothing of the same color, her signature attack is Diamond Dust (sometimes called Gem Dust, and Transcendantale in the French version).

Along with Ifrit and Bahamut, she is one of the few summons to appear in every main series game from Final Fantasy III through Final Fantasy XV (although in Final Fantasy XII she appears as an airship instead of a summon). She also appears in every main series side-story and sequel that features summons, with the only exception being Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII-.

Profile

Although enjoying regular appearances throughout the series, Shiva, like most of the popular summonable entities, has not been given a significant back story, being simply described as the "Ice Queen". She has a lover named Shivar and a daughter named Shivan in Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings. In Final Fantasy XIII, Shiva is embodied in a pair of sisters called Nix and Stiria. In Final Fantasy XV she is said to have loved Ifrit and appears as a flock of pixies as well as a human form.

Shiva has occasionally been shown as one of the more "friendly" summonable entities, only requiring being fought to gain her services in a few Final Fantasy games, and she usually does not display malicious intent when doing so.

Shiva is a willowy humanoid female with pale skin and long, blue hair so to invoke an image of ice and cold. Later summon sequences add arctic winds, freezing temperatures and large ice crystal formations. Shiva invariably wears only enough clothing to retain her modesty, along with boots and other minor aesthetic pieces, though in some appearances she's barefoot. She carries no weapon in most appearances, and implements her Diamond Dust attack with arm gestures, a snap of the fingers, and/or force of will. Later games in the series allow Shiva to carry out physical attacks in the form of kicks and punches.

Shiva (PSP).

Shiva is a summon that can be purchased as the Level 2 Summon Magic spell Icen.

  • White summoning: Mesmerize - casts Sleep on all enemies.
  • Black summoning: Icy Stare - deals Ice damage to one enemy.
  • High summoning: Diamond Dust - deals Ice damage to all enemies.

Final Fantasy IV

Shiva, the Ice Queen... To incur her wrath is to feel your very heart freeze in your chest, for cold is her anger and swift her vengeance.

Eidolon Library
Shiva (PSP).

Shiva is Rydia's summon after she rejoins the group in the Underworld. She is also a boss in Rydia's trial in the Lunar Ruins in the Advance and Complete Collection releases. Shiva has a casting time of 4, costs 30 MP to summon, has a power of 120, and attacks all enemies for ice-elemental damage. In the 3D releases, the charge time to summon her is six seconds. In the Easy Type version, the casting time was reduced to 3.

Final Fantasy IV -Interlude-

Shiva is a Summon spell for the imposter Rydia and Rydia. Her signature attack, Diamond Dust, deals moderate Ice-elemental damage to all enemies at the cost of 30 MP.

Shiva is wielded by the Frostbeast, one of four Eidolon-holding bosses found within the Lower Section of the Tower of Babil B13. Once it is defeated, it leaves behind an orb of blue light. The imposter Rydia claims the light and regains the ability to summon Shiva. Shiva, along with the other reclaimed Eidolons, is later summoned by the imposter Rydia on B6 of the tower to battle against the party.

Final Fantasy IV: The After Years

Shiva is one of the Eidolons being controlled by the Mysterious Girl. She is fought in Palom's chapter, and can later be faced in The Gathering. The first time is a scripted battle, but the second time the player fights Shiva until she stops attacking and the player must do the same if they want to recruit her, otherwise she will be killed. If the party stops fighting, Shiva will recognize Rydia and is acquired as a summon. She costs 30 MP.

Final Fantasy V

Shiva (iOS).

The Summoner job class can call Shiva. She can be found at the top of the tower at Castle Walse. This was the first time in the series Shiva appears as a boss. Along with her are three Ice Commanders who also must be defeated.

Shiva is a Level 2 summon who costs 10 MP to summon, dealing ice damage to all enemies.

Final Fantasy VI

Shiva-ffvi-ios

Shiva is an esper acquired after a boss fight in the Magitek Research Facility. She costs 27 MP to summon, and casts an unblockable Diamond Dust ability with a Spell Power of 52. As a magicite, she teaches Blizzard (x10), Blizzara (x5), Osmose (x4), Rasp (x4) and Cure (x3).

Final Fantasy VII

Summon model of Shiva.

The Shiva Summon Materia is obtained from Priscilla of lower Junon after Cloud and company defeat the boss, Bottomswell. Shiva can then be assigned to a weapon or armor and called upon in combat. Her spell power is equal to 1.5x the base magic damage.

If the player's Materia inventory is full during the scene Priscilla is supposed to give the Materia to Cloud and the party, she leaves the Shiva Materia in her room for the player to pick it up later.

Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII-

Shiva-bcffvii

Shiva.

Shiva can be summoned using the Shiva Materia. She uses Diamond Dust, an ice-elemental attack that hits all opponents. She has the same appearance as in Final Fantasy VII.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Shiva returns as a summon. She is fought as a boss via Chadley, and claimed as a summoning materia after. Once summoned, Shiva fights automatically, but the player can issue commands to make her use specific abilities, such as Heavenly Strike. Shiva uses Diamond Dust as a finishing move either when the timer expires, or when her summoner is KO'd.

Shiva's loading screen description mentions that according to legend, she once saved the planet from catastrophe by "staunching a great wound with a glacier," alluding to Jenova's arrival to the planet that has since encased the Icicle Area in snow. In the original Final Fantasy VII, based on Gast and Ifalna's taped conversations found on the Icicle Inn, it is explained that the north of the planet never melts because the planet's energy is gathered there to heal its injury.[1]

Final Fantasy VIII

Shiva.

Shiva is one of two initial Guardian Forces assigned to Squall at the start of the game, obtained by entering the tutorial section of his Study Panel. Shiva's attack, Diamond Dust, is an Ice-elemental attack that damages all enemies. Her compatibility items are Arctic Wind and North Wind, and her "opposite" Guardian Force is Ifrit whose summoning deducts compatibility with Shiva the most.

Shiva learns Str-J, Vit-J and Spr-J, as well as support abilities that boost the equipper's Vitality and Spirit. Her unique abilities are Doom, which places a death sentence countdown on the target, and a refine ability that lets one make Ice and Water spells from items. Her Triple Triad card is obtained from Zone on the White SeeD Ship when the player gives him The Girl Next Door magazine for free.

Final Fantasy IX

FFIX Shiva

Shiva is an eidolon summoned by Dagger. She is learned from equipping an Opal for 20 AP.

According to notes left on the Eidolon Wall at Madain Sari, the summoners discovered Shiva in the form of a small child. As years passed she grew into her more familiar adult appearance. When summoned she uses Diamond Dust, dealing ice damage to all opponents. Her spell power is equal to 36 plus the number of Opals in the party's inventory. Before Dagger has her eidolons extracted Shiva costs 96 MP to summon, but after being re-acquired she costs 24 MP. Dagger initially has Shiva but doesn't have enough MP to summon her without excessive level grinding.

Summoning Shiva earns the You're Cold as Ice achievement in the mobile and Steam versions.

There exists an early concept art of Shiva in a more childlike appearance. Shiva also appears as the queen card in the blackjack minigame.

Final Fantasy X

Shiva.

The aeon Shiva is obtained after Yuna visits the fayth in the Macalania Temple. Shiva's fayth is a Macalanian priestess. Her special ability is Heavenly Strike, while her Overdrive is Diamond Dust. When Lulu fully upgrades the Onion Knight, she breaks Shiva's damage limit who can now deal up to 99,999 damage.

Shiva is also fought as a boss, also appears as a Dark Shiva superboss form.

Final Fantasy X-2

Shiva returns as a boss under Shuyin's control. She is fought in the Farplane, as the temple sank to the bottom of the lake shortly after Final Fantasy X.

Final Fantasy XI

Shiva.

Shiva is one of the six celestial Avatars who represents the ice element. The job class Summoner can unlock the "spell" Shiva upon completion of the quest "Trial By Ice". Alternatively, a brave low-level Summoner may go on the quest "Trial Size Trial By Ice" and defeat Shiva in a battle alone rather than in a group. She has the highest magic attack of the six celestial avatars, making her merited blood pact "Heavenly Strike" a popular choice. Shiva is also the name of one of the game's servers.

Shiva was the young ruler of a small kingdom situated in the south of Vana'diel. Despite her age, Shiva was a wise and competent ruler, loved by her people, except a small fraction of the nobility who were faithful to Shiva's uncle, the regent when she first came to the throne. Scheming with the neighboring countries, Shiva's uncle organized a coup, seized the throne and banished Shiva to the frozen Northlands, reluctant to further provoke the anger of the population by executing her outright.

The rulers with whom the uncle had allied decided to take over the country. In the chaos that followed a regiment of soldiers, led by general Aeomatra, headed to rescue their queen. They found her frozen solid in a block of ice. Unaccustomed to the harsh climate of the Northlands, they died refusing to leave their queen. Altana was moved by Shiva's plight and transformed her into the Celestial Avatar of Ice. Aeomatra is the name of the brightest, light blue star of the Shiva constellation.

Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings

Shiva RW

Alluring Empress of Ice. Blizzards whirl and rage at her command.

Description

Shiva is the rank 3 Water Ranged summon who costs 20 affinity points to summon. Her normal attack, Triple Slap, deals water damage to one foe with three successive hits. Her special, Diamond Dust, deals heavy water damage to all enemies in range, and inflicts Stop.

She is one of the unique water types in that she is really an ice-type. Therefore, she is weak to fire instead of thunder. There are two other, weaker Yarhi also named after Shiva, Shivan and Shivar, who are stated to be her child and lover respectively.

Lightning Saga

Cool them off!

Snow Villiers' Eidolon is the Shiva Sisters, also referred to as the Twin Sisters of Shiva. The sisters are Stiria (スティリア, Sutiria?), the dark-skinned elder sister with a light patch around her right eye, and younger, lighter-skinned Nix (ニクス, Nikusu?), who has a dark patch around one eye. Snow faces the sisters as bosses at Lake Bresha as a test to prove his strength to them.

While summoned, the sisters have separate ATB Gauges, but both are dismissed if their shared SP Gauge falls to zero. This is compensated by Stiria not being able to be directly targeted. In normal mode, Stiria focuses on the Medic and Ravager roles, healing Snow and dealing ice-elemental damage to enemies. Nix focuses on a Commando role, although she does have Blizzara. While Stiria cannot be targeted by enemies, she can still be damaged by Area of Effect attacks.

Snow's Gestalt Gauge increases by driving up enemy chain gauges and by defending against enemy attacks as a Sentinel. In Gestalt Mode, the Shiva Sisters transform into a motorcycle Snow can ride.

The sisters also briefly appear in Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII.

Final Fantasy XIV

Shiva artwork.

Shiva is the featured primal and boss fight of patch 2.4, "Dreams of Ice." She was summoned by Ysayle Dangoulain in the image of an ancient saint who was beloved of Hraesvelgr, as part of her goal to end the millennium-long Dragonsong War.

Unlike the primals summoned by beast-tribes, Ysayle uses her own body as a vessel for Shiva's spirit. The Warrior of Light is tasked to defeat Iceheart as Shiva in the trial The Akh Afah Amphitheatre as part of the main scenario, but she escapes using the power of the Echo. Ysayle's later actions set the stage for the beginning of Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward, where she and Shiva return as a major character in the expansion storyline.

Another Shiva is fought as a boss in the Eden Raid in Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers. Like the primal version, Shiva is made manifest by the Warrior of Darkness's memories to restore the ice element at the Empty at the First, and Shiva makes Ryne as a vessel. The heritor's Light takes over the Oracle, forcing the Warrior to defeat her, with the help with Gaia, before she could cause another Flood of Light.

Final Fantasy XV

Shiva.

Shiva the Glacian is an Astral in the world of Eos. She is the goddess of ice. After the player acquires her as a summon in Chapter 12, she is summoned randomly, and creates copies of herself when using her signature ability, Diamond Dust. Like Ramuh, she can be summoned almost anywhere. Shiva is one of the Six, and is said to be the most compassionate toward humanity.

Justice Monsters Five

Dissidia Final Fantasy (2008)

Shiva appears as a summon that when summoned, uses Diamond Dust, "freezing" the opponent's Bravery Points, preventing them from increasing. Like many summons in Dissidia, Shiva can be summoned in two distinct ways: automatically, which summons her immediately when the user is attacked by an HP attack and her Final Fantasy VIII artwork appears, and manually, where her Final Fantasy IV artwork appears. Shiva's auto version can be obtained in the third stage of the Destiny Odyssey II storyline, and the manual version can be obtained in the same odyssey's second stage.

Dissidia Final Fantasy NT

Face me and ye shall know death's chill embrace

Shiva prior to battle

Shiva is one of the seven unlockable Summons, unlocked at random as the player's starting Summon. She summons large structures of ice and blasts frost traps to bind enemies in ice. Her signature attack is Diamond Dust, encircling the enemy party with orbs that solidify and transform into ice pillars. Her pre-summoning buff is Overflow, which restores the party's default Bravery value much faster. Post summoning, it becomes Algid Aura, which increases both the party's default Bravery value and recovery speed. When summoned, the PlayStation 4's controller's sync color changes to cobalt blue. In the game's story mode, Shiva is confronted by Cloud, Bartz and Shantotto.

As a boss, Shiva uses ice spells, such as a ring of ice around her, summoning large icicles from the ground underneath or homing orbs of ice as a ranged projectile. Her main HP attack is Boreal Plunge in which she dashes to an opponent and strikes the ground near them with her knee, causing ice to blast up around her. When her HP is reduced to 100,000, she splits into two copies to double team the party, though both are more vulnerable to being stunned. One copy will use Hailstorm as an HP attack, shooting forth a large blast of energy that travels the entire arena while the other retains the use of Boreal Plunge along with Diamond Dust, which behaves the same as it does in her summon incarnation.

Whilst not Physically appearing Yuna can summon her Shiva's Glyph to use Heavenly Strike.

Final Fantasy Record Keeper

Shiva ability sprite.

Shiva appears as a summon and as multiple bosses.

Shiva is a rank 3 summon magic ability. When used, Shiva will perform Diamond Dust, which deals two moderate ice-elemental attacks to all enemies. The default Shiva summon's appearance uses her sprite from Final Fantasy V. At the initial launch of the game, this ability dealt a single moderate ice-elemental magic attack. This was eventually changed in a later update to the game.

There are multiple versions of Shiva from different titles. These versions include Shiva from Final Fantasy V, VI, X, XIV, and World of Final Fantasy. Different enemies classified as Shiva also appear, these include the Shiva Sisters from Final Fantasy XIII and Dark Shiva from Final Fantasy X.

Lastly, Shiva can also be summoned by specific characters during their unique Soul Breaks. These Soul Breaks often have the character summon the versions of Shiva from their original game, these include the Shivas from Final Fantasy VIII, XIII, and XIV. However, certain character Soul Breaks that involve Shiva will summon the Final Fantasy V version of Shiva, e.g. Rydia's Summon Eidolon II unique Soul Break and originally Rinoa's Shiva Chain Soul Break.

  • The one that freezes everything, Ice Blue!

Followed by saying: "Shine! Summoned Creature! Shiva!"

In the English audio version, the Soil Charge Triad was changed to:

  • The cry of a soul without light, Forest Green! (or Moss Green)
  • The soil that forbids the birth of life, Maiden White!
  • To freeze all things, Ice Blue!

Followed by saying: "Shine! I summon you! Shiva!"

Etymology

Shiva (also spelled Śiva) is a Hindu god. The Hindu Shiva once saved the world by consuming poison, giving him blue skin around the area of the neck and throat. Shiva is a male god, but can merge with his consort Parvati to become Ardhanari, an androgynous Hindu god of duality. Shiva is the god of destruction along with Vishnu, who is the god of preservation, and Brahma, the god of creation. Together they are the three principle deities of the Trimurti (Hindu Triad). It is believed he periodically destroys the world, then recreates it.

Shiva has different human forms, males and females. When he was in his avatar form, he spent most of his times in the Himalayan snow mountain. Shiva in the Final Fantasy series is likely inspired by one of his female avatars.

The Japanese pronunciation "Shiba" could refer to the English word "shiver", which in Japanese would sound like "shi-ba" or "shi-va". Her name is also based from the word "shiver", given her icy nature. Another possibility is the reference to the Slavic goddess Živa, the goddess of love and fertility.
