Shin Zantetsuken from FFVI Pixel Remaster

Shin-Zantetsuken in Final Fantasy VI (Pixel Remaster).

Shin-Zantetsuken (真・斬鉄剣, Shin Zantetsuken?, lit. True Slashing Iron Sword), also known as Shin-Zantetsu and True Edge, is a recurring ability in the Final Fantasy series. It is generally an upgrade to the signature attack Zantetsuken, and generally has a much higher chance to inflict Instant Death to all enemies than Zantetsuken.

Appearances[]

Final Fantasy VI[]

Shin-Zantetsuken (also called True Edge) is the summon ability of Raiden. It has a higher success rate of inflicting death to all enemies compared to Odin, and costs 80 MP to use.

Final Fantasy X-2[]

Shin-Zantetsu is an ability of the Bushido skillset that attempts to inflict Instant Death to all enemies instead of one enemy for the cost of 32 MP. It fails when an enemy is immune to the status ailment KO. It requires 100 AP to learn on the Samurai dressphere and requires Momentum to have been mastered. Learning the ability will unlock the Zantetsu command on the Samurai. It can also be used via Lady Luck's Attack Reels by rolling three Red 7s.

Captured creatures can use Shin-Zantetsu if they use the Samurai's Honor Garment Grid. It can also be taught to a creature by consuming a Bloodlust accessory. The Insect Matriarch can learn Shin-Zantetsu after reaching a high-enough level.

Shin-Zantetsu is also used by various Fiend Arena enemies, including Auron, Bahamut, Haizhe (Oversoul), and Lucil. It has an 80% chance of causing Instant Death on the player's party.

Final Fantasy XI[]

Shin-Zantetsuken is used by Disjoined's Odin, the avatar of Odin summoned by the zone bosses Disjoined Elvaan, Disjoined Galka, Disjoined Mithra, and Disjoined Tarutaru found in Dynamis-Divergence zones. Like Zantetsuken, it causes instant death, but it is prevented by Reraise status although the status is consumed in the process.

Final Fantasy XIV[]

Shin-Zantetsuken is Odin's final ability used during his encounter inside the Urth's Fount trial. Odin will begin to use Shin-Zantetsuken at around 15% HP or after 6 minutes have passed, and the party must defeat him before the ability finishes casting, or else it will defeat the entire party.

Final Fantasy Type-0[]

Shin-Zantetsuken is an attack used by Grímnir, the more powerful Odin-type Eidolon. Shin-Zantetsuken functions much like the regular Zantetsuken, but it is more powerful and can inflict death upon even more formidable foes.

Non-Final Fantasy guest appearances[]

Kingdom Hearts series[]

In Re:coded, "Zantetsu Prime" is the final ability of the Ultima Weapon Keyblade, and grants Sora's normal attacks a random chance to destroy an enemy instantly.

Phantasy Star Online 2[]

PSO2 Shin-Zantetsuken

In the Japanese version of Phantasy Star Online 2, the Final Fantasy XIV incarnation of Odin uses Shin-Zantetsuken as its ultimate attack when its HP reaches around 15%. When it hits, it will defeat all currently active party members and will bypass all invulnerability frames skills like Katana Combat Escape or Photon Blast

Etymology[]

Shin-Zantetsuken involves a pun. "Shin" could mean "true" or "new" in on'yomi, meaning that an alternate name for Shin-Zantetsuken could read as "New Slashing Iron Sword" as an indicator of its upgraded form.
