The Shields of Rosaria are the royal guard of Grand Duchy of Rosaria in Final Fantasy XVI, a division of the Ducal Guard. Their duty is to protect the members of House Rosfield, including the current archduke of the nation and the current Dominant of Fire, Phoenix (usually, but not always, the same person). A special rank within this order is the First Shield, the Dominant's personal bodyguard who is gifted a portion of the Eikon's power, enabling them to use fire-aspected magicks without a crystal.

Blessing of the Phoenix from FFXVI

Joshua grants Clive the Blessing of the Phoenix.

First Shield is the Shield dedicated as the Dominant of Phoenix's personal bodyguard. It is customary that the Dominant shares their power with the First Shield, granting them the power to wield fire magicks, so the Shield can better protect them. Usually the Dominant of Phoenix is also the monarch, but the current Dominant is the young Joshua Rosfield, son to Archduke Elwin Rosfield. The ceremony in which the Dominant imbues their First Shield with the Eikon's Blessing is called the accolade (ナイト叙任式, naito jonin-shiki?, lit. knight investiture ceremony).[1]

The current First Shield is Clive Rosfield who passed his trial under Lord Commander Rodney Murdoch's tutelage, after which Joshua imparted him the Blessing of the Phoenix. As his first task as First Shield, Clive led a small group of Shields to Stillwind Marsh to rid the area of marauding goblins.

Behind the scenes[]

The Shields of Rosaria have some similarities to the royal guard in Final Fantasy XV, Kingsglaive, who are likewise granted the ability to wield a part of the king's magic powers, similar to how the First Shield of Rosaria gains the Blessing of the Phoenix. The Shield of the King is a role given to the king's personal bodyguard.
