Shield Dragon (シールドドラゴン, Shīrudodoragon?), also known as ShieldDrgn or Shield Wyrm, is a recurring enemy in the Final Fantasy series. It is typically a powerful purple dragon with high defenses that can grant itself beneficial status effects and counter physical attacks, but yields a large amount of experience points and other rewards upon defeat.
Appearances[]
Final Fantasy V[]
The Shield Dragon is a powerful enemy in Final Fantasy V fought in the Sealed Castle and Sealed Temple. It has innate Protect, Shell, and Reflect, counters physical attacks and inflicts Confuse with its Knock Silly, and flees when below 50% HP, making it a difficult enemy to defeat. Successfully defeating it yields a large amount of experience. Catching and Releasing a Shield Dragon will give the player access to the powerful Almagest spell.
Final Fantasy VI[]
Shield Dragon is an enemy in the Advance and Matrix Software versions of Final Fantasy VI. It appears in the Holy Palace section of the Dragons' Den. Much like its Final Fantasy V counterpart, it counters physical attacks and inflicts Confuse with Jarring Blow.
Final Fantasy XII[]
Shield Wyrm is a dragon/fell wyrm-type enemy found on the Cerobi Steppe and the Nabreus Deadlands. It gives an unusually high amount of EXP and LP for a regular enemy. It is also fought in the Zodiac versions' Trial Mode at Stage 67 along with Dheed where the Ring of Renewal can be rarely stolen from it.
The Shield Wyrm can catch a player off-guard, as it has a lot of HP for a normal enemy. Its Greater Barrier ability bestows Protect and Shell, and it can use Restore to heal itself. It uses strong physical attacks and Level 3 elemental magick.
Final Fantasy XIV[]
Conversely to its other appearances, the common Shield Dragon is a relatively weak Puk found in The Stone Vigil (Hard). However, the term "Shield Dragon" has also been used to refer to certain members of the Lesser Dragon family, which generally pose a greater threat.
