Raise magick resist of all allies in range.

Description

Shellga is a White Magicks spell in the Zodiac versions of Final Fantasy XII, and a Green Magicks spell in the original PlayStation 2 version. It is a multi-target status enhancement spell that reduces magic damage received and the chance of status ailments landing. It is an upgrade to the single-target Shell, and its physical damage counterpart is Protectga.

It is also used by Viera Huntress and Judge Drace.

Obtained[]

Shellga's license costs 110 License Points in the Zodiac versions, where the spell is found in Great Crystal's Sirhru Phullam Pratii'vaa. The area has no in-game map and every area looks the same apart from the lighting (it gets brighter the deeper the party gets), so navigating the crystal is tricky.

In the original version, Shellga's license costs 105 LP and is a Green Magicks spell bought for 9900 gil from Balfonheim Port after the party has the Treaty-Blade.

In the Zodiac versions, Shellga can be used by the White Mage, Monk, and Shikari. Monk must acquire the Esper Chaos license and Shikari the Esper Cúchulainn.

Mechanics[]

Shellga temporarily bestows the Shell status to all allies in range that reduces magic damage taken by a quarter, and halves the chance of status ailments landing. Shell status is the only means of resisting Instant Death, halving the chance of it working, as there is no accessory that protects against Instant Death. The effect is removed with Dispel. Shell does not lower healing magick effectiveness, even when used offensively against undead who have Shell.

The formula for the duration is:

The duration is the same as with the single-target Shell spell and depends on the receiver's Vitality stat, not the caster's. Haste and Slow do not affect the length other status effects will last, but Stop will halt them.

Shellga costs 40 MP to cast without Channeling licenses. The spell will bounce from Reflect unless the caster wears the Opal Ring.

Use[]

Shellga is a status enhancement spell the player can easily set up via the gambit system (such as with Ally:Any→Shellga). However, due to the party's varying Vitality stats, the Shell effect will lapse at different times on them, and if the player automates it with Shellga, the caster will re-cast it when the first party member loses the status. Therefore, it may be better to use manually rather than to automate it. The gambit for Shell or Shellga are best placed below attack and heal gambits so it does not activate mid battle, but rather when there are no enemies in vicinity, unless the player wants to keep refreshing it in harder engagements, such as against Rare Game, hunt marks, and bosses.

The party can also get permanent Shell from a Shell Shield, and wearing one for long engagement where enemies use instant death may be a good idea, such as for Yiazmat and Zodiark. As Shell halves the chance of ailments working, the player should not have Shell on if they are using Reverse on their own party.
