The character is enveloped in a magick field, increasing magick resist and reducing magick damage taken. The effect is temporary.

Description

Shell is a status in Final Fantasy XII that reduces magick damage taken by 25% for a duration. Its physical damage counterpart is Protect.

The formula for the duration is:

Shell also halves the success rate of status ailments from taking effect, whether via spell or as an added effect. It is thus the only way to somewhat mitigate the effect of instant death. Shell does not mitigate Technicks, such as Charm, but will affect the Indigo Pendant accessory.

Shell is effective against magick-casting and ailment-inflicting enemies, like many undead and elementals and entites. It does not hamper healing spells' effectiveness, even when used to damage the undead.

In the Japanese original version and International Zodiac Job System, the icon for the Shell status is a green seashell. This is changed to a green circle elsewhere.

Abilities[]

Item Baltoro Seed
Spells Shell & Shellga (Green [OG] / White Magicks [Zodiac])
Weapons Arc Scale

Equipping the Shell Shield grants permanent Shell to the wearer.

Picking up loot with the highest chain level sometimes buffs the player party with Protect and/or Shell.

In the original PlayStation 2 version, Stamp can transfer positive statuses as well as negative to any target and thus can be used to bestow Shell when the user has it; this was changed in the Zodiac versions so only ailments can be transferred with Stamp to enemies.

The ally-targeting gambit specifically for this status is called "Ally: status = Shell" while the self-targeting gambit is "Self: status = Shell". In the original version, these gambits can be bought for 50 gil after the events at Draklor Laboratory. The enemy-targeting gambit is "Foe: status = Shell", in the original version purchasable for 50 gil after the boss battle at Mt Bur-Omisace. In the Zodiac versions, all of these gambits can be purchased for 70 gil after leaving Nalbina Dungeons.
