Shadow Flare is a spell available to the Arcanist class at level 50, as well as its subsequent jobs of Summoner and Scholar. It has a 50 potency and lasts 30 seconds, is an area-of-effect aura based on a location of the player's choice, and inflicts the status effect Sustained Slow with a potency of 5%. Enemies that step into the aura will take damage as soon as the next damage "tic" is calculated, or immediately if the spell is cast where they are standing.

There is a 40% chance of it being used in Southwest Saronia and Eureka, and a mere 2% chance of it being used in deserts, Altar Cave, Mythril Mine, Sealed Cave, Tozus Tunnel, Cave of the Circle, Ancient Ruins, Ancients' Maze, Doga's Grotto, Cave of Shadows, Bahamut's Lair, Falgabard, forest and land on the world map, Dragon's Peak, Castle Sasune, Bahamut's boss fight, Crystal Tower, Dragon Spire, Castle Hein, Goldor Manor, Tower of Owen (except Floor 1), sky terrain and Molten Cave.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Sephiroth uses Shadow Flare: should he cycle through all the elemental infusions and access a dark version, he can already cast it in the final battle's third phase, though he will only summon a single globe of dark energy. During the final phase Sephiroth can cast Shadow Flare regardless of whether he got the chance to do so earlier, and it releases multiple gravitational globes of darkness.

Final Fantasy XIV

Enemies that step into the aura will take damage as soon as the next damage "tic" is calculated, or immediately if the spell is cast where they are standing. It has been removed in Shadowbringers.

Etymology

A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it.

A flare is a pyrotechnical phenomenon that produces intense amounts of heat and energy that does not result in an explosion (an immediate release of energy).
