Shadow Flare is once again one of Sephiroth's Bravery attacks, but this time, it can only be performed on the ground. It is much closer to its original FFVII incarnation as a powerful explosion of energy, but with an added vacuum effect to draw opponents in before it sets off.

Etymology

A shadow is an area where direct light from a light source cannot reach due to obstruction by an object. It occupies all of the space behind an opaque object with light in front of it.

A flare is a pyrotechnical phenomenon that produces intense amounts of heat and energy that does not result in an explosion (an immediate release of energy).
