Memento of father
Description
The Seraph Comb is a weapon for Red XIII in Final Fantasy VII. It is has four Materia slots and strong stats that greatly surpasses many weapons available for other characters at the time, but none of its slots are linked.
Like all Red XIII's weapons, Seraph Comb is not rendered or visible in-game, and also cannot be thrown.
Obtained[]
The Seraph Comb is obtained automatically at the end of the Cave of the Gi in Cosmo Canyon during "In the Land of the Study of Planet Life". After this, it cannot be sold or thrown.
Mechanics[]
As the Seraph Comb has a base Attack stat bonus of 76, the base damage for physical attacks when the Seraph Comb is equipped is in the following formula:
where "Level" is Red XIII's current level and "Strength" is his Strength stat. The Seraph Comb also has an Attack% (Accuracy) of 108%, and grants a +14 bonus to Red XIII's Magic stat.
Use[]
The Seraph Comb is obtained for free, and has stats that are stronger than Red XIII's other weapons at this point in the game, as well as weapons available for other characters at the time. Its only drawback is that its Materia slots are unlinked, meaning that after a certain point, players will have to choose carefully which they prefer.
The Seraph Comb has four single Materia slots. Due to Red XIII's own stats and the Magic boost provided by his weapons, he is one of the best mages in the party alongside Cloud, Aeris, and Cait Sith. Red XIII therefore benefits greatly from Magic Materia or Summon Materia, but is limited by his inability to pair Support Materia on any slot. The player can give him armor with paired slots, and use the weapon to take advantage of Independent Materia to improve Red XIII's stats, or Command Materia.
The Seraph Comb outclasses Red XIII's previously available weapons in terms of pure stats, and has better Attack stats than the Adaman Clip, which is obtained later. The lack of linked slots can be a major drawback due to how he is played. This becomes more of a problem later when Red XIII has access to the Crystal Comb, which surpasses both weapons in terms of stats and slots, rendering the Seraph Comb obsolete from that point onwards.
Seraph Comb is notable in that it has the highest Attack stat of any weapon available at the time until "Within the Temple of the Ancients".
Etymology[]
seraph, the singular of seraphim, is one of a class of celestial beings mentioned once in the Hebrew Bible (Tanakh or Old Testament), in the Book of Isaiah. Later Jewish imagery perceived them as having human form, and in that way they passed into the ranks of Christian angels, where they represent the highest rank of angels. They are traditionally depicted with three pairs of wings, from a description given in Isaiah: "With two, they covered their faces; with two, they covered their feet; and with two, they flew."
