Battle[]

The first phase of the fight begins with Cloud facing Sephiroth Reborn solo. Sephiroth Reborn floats, and while Cloud is at a distance, Sephiroth Reborn switches between Whisper Vortex and Fate's Scream to keep Cloud from the Body. When Cloud gets close enough to attack, Sephiroth Reborn uses Interred Horror and Errant Whisper once each, then uses Maelstrom to blow Cloud back out of range. This pattern continues until Cloud cripples the Body.

Once Cloud has crippled the Body, a swarm of white Whispers restrains Sephiroth, pulling him down so Cloud can climb his massive form. While climbing, black Whispers attack Cloud, but while they can reduce his HP to 1, they cannot kill him. Upon reaching the Head, Cloud slashes at the Chest's face and begins the second half of the first phase. When Cloud is within melee distance, Sephiroth Reborn will use Apocalyptic Fire to push Cloud back. Otherwise, he cycles between Zanshin, Swarm, Hell's Gate, and Interred Horror until Cloud defeats him.

Cloud slashes across the Head's chest, causing black Whispers pour out and through a crack in spacetime. In the City of the Ancients, Sephiroth Reborn descends before Cait Sith, and two other party members, beginning the second phase of the fight. Sephiroth Reborn summons Bahamut Arisen Whisper, and can help Bahamut by attacking with Atonement, and use Spirit of Calamity and Blessing of Calamity to keep the Whisper alive until both its wings are crippled.

In a third world that is on the brink of destruction from Meteor, Zack faces Sephiroth Reborn solo. He uses similar attacks to the first phase against Cloud, with more powerful versions of his Hell's Gate and Zanshin attacks—Unholy Gate and Zanshin Profaned, respectively. The Chest has additional attacks; Lacryma Deus, which is a red laser from the Chest that sweeps the floor, and can inflict Slow and Silence, and Wail, which summons a floating dark ball of energy. If Zack is bound by Wail, Sephiroth draws him airborne before the Head, which uses Retribution to impale Zack and launch him away. If Wail hits the protective barrier of lilies, it turns white, and Zack can launch it at the Chest to cripple it. After a period of time, Sephiroth Reborn will use Remake to restore the Chest until both the Head and Chest are defeated.

Back in the City of the Ancients, the party members notice that Sephiroth Reborn appears increasingly wounded. Since it exists in all three realities simultaneously, Cloud and Zack have helped weaken Sephiroth before three other members begin the fourth and final phase. Sephiroth Reborn recreates his wings and protects the Core with a barrier, then alternates between elemental attacks: Great Tribulation for Ice, Infernal Flare for Fire, Rapture for Wind, and Keraunos for Lightning. The Core will occasionally use Profane to poison the party. Once both wings are crippled, the barrier around the Core disintegrates.

Once the Core is destroyed, Sephiroth Reborn descends to head level, and uses his most powerful attacks, Unholy Gate, Apocalyptic Fire, Heartless Angel, and Octaslash until he is defeated. Sephiroth lands before Cloud in the first world, beginning the final phase of the final boss fight.

Strategy[]

Sephiroth Reborn has many more magic attacks than physical attacks, and so Manaward Manaward, Shell Shell, and equipment that protects against magic damage may be useful. Barret, Red XIII, and Yuffie benefit from elemental protection but Sephiroth's other phases do not use elemental attacks, nor is he weak to any element; therefore, the player can reserve any Elemental Materia Elemental Materia for these three's armor. The player cannot equip Zack, and Cloud will have yet another battle to come after Sephiroth Reborn. During the third phase, the player can still use a synergy ability despite fighting alone, because Cloud and Zack are spiritually connected.

Musical themes[]

Sephiroth Reborn has five tracks on the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Original Soundtrack—one for each phase, with "Sephiroth Reborn - Transfiguration" as a 30-second transition piece between the two halves of the first phase.

  • "Sephiroth Reborn - Advent" plays during the first phase.
  • "Sephiroth Reborn - For Aerith" plays during the second phase.
  • "Sephiroth Reborn - Embrace Your Dreams" plays during the third phase.
  • "Sephiroth Reborn - Second Advent" plays during the fourth phase.

All are original pieces composed by Masashi Hamauzu; "Sephiroth Reborn - For Aerith" includes a motif from "Those Chosen by the Planet" and "Sephiroth Reborn - Second Advent" includes lyrics from "One Winged Angel". "Sephiroth Reborn - Second Advent" is also an expanded variation of "The Three SOLDIERs", the boss theme for the first battle with Sephiroth.

Behind the scenes[]

In the Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Ultimania, Tetsuya Nomura explained that Sephiroth's existence transcends worlds and he exists simultaneously in multiple worlds. When Zack comes to help Cloud fight Sephiroth, they both exist in a moment where the two worlds join. Further, when Zack, Cloud, and the other party members all fight Sephiroth Reborn, though they are presumably existing in separate worlds, they are still fighting the same entity.

Etymology[]

Sephiroth Reborn has the same name in Japanese in both Final Fantasy VII and Rebirth, though it was localized as "Bizarro∙Sephiroth" in English. His abilities have eclectic names with a theme of disrespect toward things balanced and holy, and terms associated with end-times. For example, Zanshin Profaned: Zanshin is a state of awareness in Japanese martial arts. "Interred" is often used to describe something buried or forgotten, and Lacryma Deus translates to "god of tears" or "god of weeping". Rapture is an end-time event in some Christian belief systems.
