Description

Sephiroth is a playable character and boss in Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia who can be recruited during the Lost Chapter One-Winged Angel.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Sephiroth's appearance is adapted from his Dissidia design, which is based on his appearance Sephiroth AC CGI artwork in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII with some changes to resemble Yoshitaka Amano's artwork of him AmanoSeph. His belt is ornate and decorated with beads, he wears a bracelet with similar beads on his right wrist, and his pauldrons have a different design. He wears white and lavender sashes under his coat, both a reference to Amano's design and to his wings Safer sephirothFFVII as Safer∙Sephiroth‎.

His first alternate costume, "Executioner", is based on his appearance Sephiroth Final BossFFVII in the final scripted battle in Final Fantasy VII, leaving him shirtless with black pants being colored lighter than the original.

Personality[]

Sephiroth's personality is cold and aloof. He tends to keep to himself, preferring to observe others rather than interact with them. He is knowledgeable about the workings of the world, but prefers to use that knowledge to hold power over others rather than sharing it. He is single-minded in his pursuit of power, taking advantage of others when they are weakened.

His appearance in Opera Omnia occurs after the events of Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, so his only memories are that of vengeance against Cloud, having discarded the rest of his memories in Final Fantasy VII: On the Way to a Smile. He claims that he was not summoned by either Materia or Spiritus to that world, but instead sought it out himself. His goals align with that of Jenova, and he still views humans as parasites, nothing more than memories to return to the planet. He is able to use all of Jenova's abilities, including reuniting disparate cells and use the memories of other characters to sow discord and confusion. He wishes to use the world as an ark to travel the stars, with himself at the helm.

In spite of this, Sephiroth and Jenova remain separate entities, with Sephiroth still referring to Jenova as "Mother", sharing his plans with her and seeking to summon her into the new world. When faced with the memories of his past, Sephiroth's focus wavers, revealing that underneath his cold demeanor lies a turbulent mix of pain, anger, and loneliness.

Story[]

Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. (Skip section)

Act 1[]

Sephiroth first appears in "Domina Wastelands". Kuja hints at his appearance by saying "the one who possesses the call of chaos is nearby. He's quite the spectacle─a man with long silver hair, wielding a long, curved blade." Cloud finds Sephiroth and challenges him. Sephiroth seems unperturbed by the fight, and hints that while his power grows, it's not enough.

Lost Chapter - One Winged Angel[]

The chapter begins with Cloud cornering Sephiroth. Cloud's friends come to help, but a Manikin of Sephiroth appears, and Sephiroth decides to battle his Manikin with Cloud, which surprises the group. After the battle, Sephiroth appears amused by the group's trust in Mog, implying that the Moogle may be manipulating the group by withholding information about the characters' missing memories. He gives Mog his dimensional coordinates, allowing the team to use his power to assist them. Sephiroth joins Kefka, Kuja, and Seymour, dismissing Kefka's attempts at small talk. The four discuss the group's trust in Mog, and Sephiroth dismisses their sympathy and forgiveness as "lies that pitiful humans cling to for survival."

Act 2[]

Sephiroth appears in "Respite's Authenticity". He appears with his name as ??? and some of his dialogue is marked with << >>, implying he is having a conversation, possibly with Jenova, who says "<<The seat of the gods will become my new promised land. >>" Vayne overhears the last of this conversation and realizes Sephiroth's plan to take the goddess Materia's throne and become a god. Vayne warns Ignis of Sephiroth's plans: "Being ruled by someone who seeks to be a hero by slaying the gods is perhaps an even worse fate [than the current situation]." Sephiroth uses a clone of Zack to slay Materia and take the throne. Lusting for even more power, Sephiroth creates multiple clones of Zack, who have wills of their own but are easily controlled by Sephiroth. While disguised, the player can distinguish them from the real versions as their dialogue is denoted by the same << >> symbols as earlier. Cloud and the others defeat these clones, and Cloud explains how Jenova can create convincing clones using the memories and emotional attachments of others. Defeating the clones of Zack restores the missing memories of the real Zack. After attempting to fight Sephiroth, Ignis realizes that by taking Materia's place, Sephiroth made himself an integral part of that world: "If we lose, this world will be consumed, and if we win, his place on the throne will only be the firmer." The group retreats to fight Sephiroth elsewhere. Spiritus interferes in the fight and tries to banish Sephiroth to the rift in space and time, but it doesn't work. Sephiroth instead flees, leaving the throne empty. Spiritus reveals Materia to be alive, but extremely weakened.

In "Across the Skies", Sephiroth briefly appears before Vayne, telling him to get out of his way. Vayne notes that Sephiroth seems to have "multiple consciousnesses."

In "Warriors of Light", Sephiroth tells Jenova that Shinryu will "open the path to infinite parallel universes." Zack, Cloud, Tifa, Aerith, and Barret rush up to meet Sephiroth, with Zack telling Sephiroth he is not a monster. Cloud tells Zack this isn't the Sephiroth he knows, and that he's no longer human. Zack insists on handling things, saying he wished he had defeated Sephiroth back in Nibelheim. Sephiroth explains that the memories of "sealed magic, the ancient civilization's secrets, my mother's memories, [and] my one-winged form" were devoured by Shinryu, but that Sephiroth, the "hero you admired," is free. Cloud insists Sephiroth is a monster, but Sephiroth doubles down, saying that the world needs a hero like him and that it should not be run by "mindless puppets" like Materia and Spiritus's warriors. Barret calls Sephiroth "Shinra scum" and Sephiroth bemusedly realizes Cloud's friends are missing memories. He offers the hope of his guidance before engaging in battle. He ends the battle by once again insisting he is the hero, and that Cloud and Zack cannot escape the "fate of reunion."

Act 3[]

In "Holy Ground", Sephiroth tells Vayne he needs a compass of light to "fulfill Mother's purpose." When Vayne asks how Sephiroth plans to obtain one, Sephiroth laughs and tells Vayne he has a loyal puppet, "someone who takes great pains to keep their ego in check." The camera pans to show a weakened Reno and Rude. Sephiroth calls the two Turks "unworthy" then leaves to find Cloud. Sephiroth finds Cloud and taunts him, telling him "There is no one fit to guide you but me. The light that guides is in my hands." He takes control of Cloud and forces him to hand over his compass of light, similarly to how he had forced Cloud to give him the Black Materia, insisting this task is what Cloud was designed to do. Aerith tells Sephiroth to stop treating Cloud like an object, to which Sephiroth replies that he is, and that Sephiroth considers Cloud to be flawed, but quite loyal. He takes Cloud's compass of light and leaves.

In "The Planet and the Hero", Cloud's compass of light guided Sephiroth to a fragment of silt, which restores Sephiroth's power, and a fragment of memories belonging to Cloud and his friends, which he promptly shatters. Kadaj feels the power gained from the silt in his body, explaining to Vayne that while he and Sephiroth are not quite siblings, they were born from the same mother, and that Kadaj was created from Sephiroth's emotions. Edge and the Turks happen across Sephiroth and realize Sephiroth has stolen Cloud's compass. They try to escape, but Sephiroth plans to sacrifice them to draw Cloud near. Kadaj intervenes, claiming that Sephiroth was hogging Mother's power for himself. The others escape during Sephiroth and Kadaj's squabble. Cloud's compass leads Sephiroth to Zack. Sephiroth remarks that the compass desires the light within Zack. "Ever the jilted one, Cloud." Sephiroth attempts to steal everyone's compasses but is stopped by Kadaj. Sephiroth uses the power from the silt to transform into Safer Sephiroth. Cloud and his friends defeat Sephiroth and reclaim the compass. Sephiroth admits that continuing to fight is worthless without the light. He leaves, saying he no longer needs the light for now.

In "Flood of Darkness", Kadaj fights against Sephiroth, but realizes that Sephiroth possesses more than Jenova's power. Cloud and Zack come to Kadaj's aid, and Sephiroth mocks them, saying they have no memories that would drive them to help the Remnant. Tifa tries to encourage Cloud, but Sephiroth questions how Cloud can be sure that the memories haven't been twisted out of shape. Sephiroth then transforms into Safer Sephiroth.

In "An Imperfect Scheme", Xande and Seymour confront Sephiroth about meddling with their Torsions. Sephiroth reveals that the gods had lost their power and that he now considers the world worth using. He implores Xande and Seymour to join him in remaking this world and others, and while Xande refuses, Seymour sees a path towards salvation and joins Sephiroth.

Act 4[]

In "An Experiment in Crystals", Sephiroth and Seymour ask Kefka for help releasing the world from the gods. When Kefka refuses, Sephiroth attacks, telling Kefka to return the divine power he had stolen. Kefka absorbs the energy from battle to create a dark crystal. While Seymour laments the loss of energy in "Even Should Our Paths Diverge", Sephiroth insists there is another way to achieve their goals.

In "A Long-Awaited Arrival", Sephiroth convinces Kadaj to join him by telling him he plans to summon Jenova using his memories. In the process, they run into Weiss, and Sephiroth invites Weiss to join himself, Kadaj, and Seymour. In "Conflicting Desires", Sephiroth reveals that he knows Weiss's memories are incomplete, and offers him the freedom he desires. Weiss instead senses that the group's goals are not aligned, and begins to manipulate Kadaj and Seymour.

After a fight with Shelke and the Turks, Weiss realizes that Sephiroth does not fear him. He pieces together that Sephiroth holds Weiss's memories. In "Two Sides of the Same Coin", Weiss joins their alliance, and Sephiroth outlines his plan to use Weiss's power to cleave to the heart of the world and steal the gods' power.

In "A Place Abandoned", when the world resembles a mako reactor, Sephiroth reveals he plans to repeat his dive into the Lifestream to absorb the world's memories. When Kadaj insists on reuniting with Jenova instead, Sephiroth reveals that she could not cross the boundaries of the worlds, and that Sephiroth merely intended to use Kadaj to reach Jenova alone. Kadaj fights Sephiroth and asserts that while he may have been borne of Sephiroth's will, that he is his own person.

In "Intenional Inconsistency", Sephiroth stops Cloud from following an illusion created by Kefka. When asked if he is searching for a newly formed crystal formed from condensed energy, Sephiroth simply tells Cloud he prefers his puppets to remain powerless. Rufus Shinra notices something off about Sephiroth's interactions, and begins an experiment to test his theory.

In "Awkward Pride", Sephiroth appears to rescue Tifa from an Ochu, but it was merely a coincidence - Sephiroth was after the crystal the monster was guarding. When Tifa recalls her first impressions of Sephiroth, he reveals he doesn't know what she's talking about. When Cloud comes to help Tifa, he and Sephiroth enter a heated battle. Afterwards, Angeal confronts Sephiroth, trying to reconnect with him and understand how Sephiroth could behave so differently than when they were friends. Sephiroth tries to fight Angeal, but discovers he is unfocused when Angeal is around.

In "Daybreak and Nightmare Gone", Sephiroth reveals that he cast aside his memories in the Lifestream, and that his only memories are that of Cloud. In "Repeated Misgivings", Rufus reveals the results of his experiment: he implanted Sephiroth cells into various crystals, and noted that they showed signs of the Reunion. Physically, Sephiroth is the body of Jenova. Despite this, Angeal insists that Sephiroth's will is his own, and that Sephiroth would never allow another's will to supercede his. He and Zack hope that they can restore Sephiroth to the hero he was before his fall.

Angeal, Cloud, Tifa, and Zack question whether Sephiroth's will is his own, and whether Sephiroth deserves redemption. Sephiroth insists that he chose this fate for himself, and that it is not Jenova's will. However, in "An Orchestrated Reunion", it's revealed that Sephiroth's memories of Angeal are slowly returning, and they make him unstable. Sephiroth had embedded his cells in all the crystal fragments he and Seymour had found, and he uses the Reunion to gather them in one place to gain power. He uses a Manikin of Tifa to gather a piece of crystal that Barret was protecting, and the resemblance to the Reunion in the Northern Cave begins to stir Cloud and his friends' memory. Aerith stands between Sephiroth and the completed crystal, but Angeal and Weiss block Sephiroth's blow, saving Aerith and the crystal. Weiss, channeling his "brother", Genesis, recites Loveless. The three friends reunited, Weiss, Angeal, and Sephiroth spar. Sephiroth tries to deny his memory of his time with his friends and draws energy from the crystal. Vincent tries to tell Sephiroth about Lucrecia, but Sephiroth ignores him and absorbs the energy.

Cloud and his friends defeat Sephiroth, and in "Beyond Memories" Sephiroth destroys the crystal, preventing Cloud from sealing him away. With the world destabilizing, Cloud seeks Sephiroth out inside a hidden Torsion. There, Cloud uses Omnislash against Sephiroth, defeating him once and for all. Sephiroth fades away, telling Cloud that he and Jenova would always return. Cloud responds that he will fight Sephiroth as many times as it takes.

Gameplay[]

Sephiroth is a straightforward, pure melee damage attacker. All his skills deal various HP damage in-between BRV hits, and they also boast high BRV gains, making him less reliant on BRV damage. The core of his gameplay revolves around his stacking buffs, Jenova, Reunion and Bringer of Despair. The goal is to have this stacks maxed as soon as possible to further enable Sephiroth's damage as they give hefty increases to many of his stats.

Fervent Blow, his first skill, is an area-of-effect attack, while Octaslash, his second skill, is single target; both these skills grant stacks of the Jenova buff. His EX, Black Materia, is notable as it inflicts BREAK on all enemies and grant him a free ability turn, while also granting him stacks of the Reunion buff. His LD attack, Scintilla, is an area-of-effect attack and grants him stacks of the Bringer of Despair buff; it also inflicts a gold-framed debuff on all enemies called Cellular Erosion, which increases their BRV damage taken while also causing BRV poison.

Sephiroth's BT attack is Heaven's Light, and its effect is unique as it'll set enemies BRV to 1 after each turn (be the player's party or the enemies). This not only makes Sephiroth formidable in fights where enemies get high BRV gains on thresholds, but also pairs him exceptionally well with allies that have benefits from breaking enemies, such as Dorgann, Yda, Lightning and Aranea.

His FR attack, Black Conflict, features Garland and re-applies Cellular Erosion. Sephiroth's Force Time conditions requires attacking debuffed enemies and having stackable buffs/effects (such as Sephiroth's own buffs or "overhead" buffs such as Cor's King's Power Within); an easy way to fulfill the second condition for characters who lack these kind of buffs is to use Rydia's LD Call, Radiant Breath, which grants a buff called Blink (that grants 100% evasion), which has no duration (instead stacks are consumed when enemies attack).

Sephiroth's only flaws is that he's considered a very "selfish" party member as he doesn't bring any buffs or utility to the team, being solely focused on damage. This makes him heavily reliant on supports or allies that can cover specific fight mechanics. He's also very reliant on EX and LD as they far outclass his other abilities in terms of pure damage.
