Sector 4 is a location in the Final Fantasy VII series. It is one of the eight sectors in Midgar, and is visited briefly during the events of Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy VII Remake. The locations visited in Sector 4 are unrevisitable and cannot be re-explored once the story has progressed beyond them.

After the success of the Mako Reactor 1 bombing mission, Avalanche plan another mission on Mako Reactor 5. In the early hours of the morning after the first mission, they board a train for the Sector 4 Station. The train uses a new ID scan system, and the fake IDs made by Jessie fail and the party plans to jump off the moving train into the train tunnel.

Unauthorized personnel are discovered on board prior to when the check was meant to happen due to modifications to the ID cards made by Jessie, meaning the party has to move down the train to the end cart before the lockdown. In the original, Cloud's party jumps off the train while Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie stay on board in disguises. In the remake, Wedge and Jessie remain back at the Sector 7 Slums and Biggs has already gone on ahead.

After moving down the railway, Cloud's party come to Shinra's security sensors and have to look for another way. The party crawl through a duct into the Lower Sector 4 Plate. As Cloud's party move through the plate, they find the rest of Avalanche have made it there safely (just Biggs in the remake). The others withdraw back to Sector 7 as Cloud and his party enter Mako Reactor 5.

GeographyEdit

The lower Sector 4 plate is a series of winding ducts, passageways, ladders, and tiered platforms supported by steel beams, located underneath Midgar's Sector 4 plate, and suspended high above Midgar's undercity below. The plate is connected to Mako Reactor 5, and several monsters dwell within it.

In Final Fantasy VII Remake, the lower Sector 4 plate is divided into labeled sections. These sections house immense sun lamps, used to provide artificial sunlight to the undercity below, as well as control rooms to oversee them. Deactivating these provides power to platforms that move across the plate. A large ventilation fan is also present, and a path across a metal pipe runs directly along the ventilation fan's air. Where the monsters dwell, cobwebs and nests can be seen.

Final Fantasy VIIEdit

Sector 4 is visited by Cloud, Barret, and Tifa on the party's way to No. 5 Reactor.

The field comprises only a few screens, where some enemies such as the Grashtrike and some Shinra defenses are fought. Along the way, the party can interact with Wedge and Jessie before meeting Biggs at the end. The Sector 4 field map also contains the Winding Tunnels from the train to reach Sector 4, and then the reactor.

Final Fantasy VII RemakeEdit

Sector 4 is visited throughout Chapter 6, "Light the Way," and comprises a series of passageways and tiered platforms on the way to Mako Reactor 5. It is explored by Cloud Strife, Barret Wallace, and Tifa Lockhart shortly after they leave the Corkscrew Tunnel of the previous chapter. The group traverse the Section G and Section H portions of the plate.

Throughout the Sector 4 area, the party must interact with the plate's sun lamps to deactivate them in order to create a suitable path across the elevators and platforms. On the way, the group fight monsters in the form of the grashtrike enemies, as well as Shinra's defenses in the form of Sentry Rays. While exploring, two notable materia can be obtained: the Elemental Materia Elemental Materia during "Collapsed Passageway," and the Chocobo & Moogle Materia Chocobo & Moogle Materia sidequest during the "Inside the Ventilation Fan" sidequest.

Compared to Final Fantasy VII, the Sector 4 area is greatly expanded. The objectives to interact with the sun plates are entirely new, as are the side objectives. Another major difference is that the interactions with Wedge and Jessie are not present, and that the field map for Sector 4 and for the Corkscrew Tunnel are different.

Behind the scenesEdit

In the PlayStation translation of Final Fantasy VII, the lines Jessie says are slightly different from what she says in the PC and later versions. In the former, she states she made Cloud's ID card "special", while the latter translations clarify that she modified his card.

In the scene showing Cloud and Zack right outside Midgar in Final Fantasy VII, the Midgar upper plate for Sector 4 is absent. While Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- states the Sector 4 plate is last on the schedule for completion, Final Fantasy VII shows it fully complete and in place, while Sector 6 is the sole sector still under construction as of the game's opening.
