Searching for the You of That Day is the thirtieth chapter of Final Fantasy VII, and the final chapter of the third act, "Turmoil". After Cid Highwind's party obtained two Huge Materia, they chose to check up on Cloud Strife and Tifa Lockhart in Mideel. Finding the town attacked by Ultimate Weapon, Cloud and Tifa fell into the lifestream, where Tifa worked with Cloud to reconstruct his memories and uncover the truth behind his past.

Walkthrough

Mideel

The quest can begin any time after completing the Fort Condor and North Corel Huge Materia quests. At this point, the party led by Cid must return to Mideel. If the player has yet to obtain the Curse Ring from the weapon shop in Mideel, they must do so now before proceeding or it will be lost. The Contain Materia from the white chocobo can be obtained later if it was not already obtained.

The objective of the quest is to talk to Tifa in the clinic. This begins a story sequence and the quest follows.

Following this, an unwinnable battle begins against Ultimate Weapon. Ultimate Weapon performs three powerful attacks against the party before running. It is best therefore to simply use Big Guard and other defensive abilities, curing the party to survive the attack. The player can also attempt to Steal a Curse Ring from Ultimate Weapon before the fight ends, but should focus on staying alive.

Following the fight, another story sequence occurs and then a cutscene.

Cloud's subconscious

The player takes control of Tifa inside Cloud's subconscious. This area is entirely story-driven, and no battles will occur; it is not even possible to open the menu here.

The quest is contained by talking to the different Cloud images in each part of Cloud's subconscious. Talking to some will just lead to a line of dialogue and not proceed, but talking to the correct one will lead to a sequence and unlock the next. The correct order to talk to each Cloud is:

1. Top of the screen, around the entrance to Nibelheim.
2. Left end of the screen, around the Nibelheim water tower.
3. Bottom of the screen.

After talking to the Clouds in this order, the Clouds will merge to one. Following him leads to a final sequence that leads into the next chapter, "Clash in the Deep Sea", in which Cloud will return as leader aboard the Highwind.

Behind the scenes

Cloud's rescue scene was originally planned to be even longer; after washing up on the shore of Mideel with Tifa, Cloud would have been unconscious and Tifa would have had to revive him with CPR. During this stage Cloud would have a vision of being experimented on by Professor Hojo in Nibelheim, and of his escape with Zack Fair. The scene was moved, and is viewed in the Mansion basement in the game's final version.

Tifa and Cloud's childhood in Nibelheim, first depicted in this chapter, was expanded upon in the novel Final Fantasy VII Remake Trace of Two Pasts. Tifa's childhood friends were named Emilio, Tyler, and Lester, and the group was collectively known as the "Four Fiends".
