Equips "Seal" magic
Description
Seal is a Magic Materia in Final Fantasy VII equipped to provide the user disabling negative status effect spells: Sleepel, which inflicts the Sleep status effect that renders a target unable to act until woken by an attack or the duration ends, and Silence, which inflicts the Silence status effect that renders a target unable to cast spells. Seal can also be linked with the Added Effect Materia to provide immunity to Sleep and Silence.
Obtained[]
Seal is purchased for 3,000 gil from Junon, or from Costa del Sol during part 1.

Use[]
The Seal Materia grants the spell Sleepel at level 1, and Silence at level 2. The former inflicts the Sleep status effect, rendering a target unable to act until awoken by a physical attack or the duration ends, meaning their ATB is not frozen and they are still vulnerable to magic damage. The latter inflicts Silence, disabling their magic commands for its duration. Sleepel has 72% of inflicting Sleep, while Silence has a 60% chance.
Both of Seal's spells can hinder enemies when cast. However, the main drawback is that there are other ways to inflict both status effects, or to inflict much more crippling status effects such as Frog. Seal is best used by linking it with the Added Effect Materia. When linked with the Materia on weapons, it has a 20% chance of inflicting the statuses on enemies with a physical attack, and when linked on armor, it can provide immunity to both statuses. As Seal only comes with minor stat changes (+2% to MP and +1 Magic, but also -2% HP and -1 Strength), it is safe to equip this on any character. However, equipping Headband provides immunity to Silence, as can a Ribbon.
