Scarmiglione is a storyline boss from Final Fantasy IV. A vile monster known as the Blighted Despot, he appears as one of Golbez's Archfiends. He is fought three times (twice in a row early in the story), and takes on more than one form. He is an undead enemy, and thus is weak to Fire and healing spells.

2nd Form

Battle[]

First battle[]

Scarmiglione is accompanied by a vast number of Skulnants and counters every attack that hits him with Thunder on a random party member.

Second battle[]

I will ssssmite your ruin on the mountain sssside!

Scarmiglione, upon the second battle

In Scarmiglione's second form there are no monsters accompanying him, but he has a strong physical attack that has a small chance of inflicting Blind, and counters physical attacks with Cursed Elegy, which inflicts Slow on the party. While he's weak against Fire spells, casting one on him may result in a nasty counterattack in Gas, which inflicts various status effects like Sleep, Curse, and Silence. This battle is a back attack.

Strategy[]

One should have plenty of Echo Herbs on hand to cure Silence. Tellah and Porom should always use Cura on Scarmiglione or the other characters when they need healing. Palom should cast Fira without any delay, but Scarmiglione will likely retaliate with Gas as a result of it. Cecil should use Hi-Potion on Scarmiglione as his dark sword is useless against the boss. If the player wants an easy win, they can use an Elixir on Scarmiglione, if they have it.

As the battle is a back attack, it would be wise to invert the party lineup beforehand.

Third battle[]

Prior to the fight, Scarmiglione is revived alongside the other Archfiends by Zemus so they could give one last group attack upon Cecil Harvey and his party. He is fought first.

Etymology[]

Scarmiglione is a demon in the Inferno of Dante's Divine Comedy. He is one of the 12 Malebranche ("Evil Claws") who guard Bolgia Five of the eighth circle of Hell, Malebolge. Vulgar and quarrelsome, their duty is to force the corrupt politicians to stay under the surface of a boiling lake of pitch.

His name means "Trouble Maker".
