With the chaos resulting from the Meteor reports, we desperately need to rally public support... it's better that we punish somebody, anybody.

Scarlet

Scarlet, written Scarlett in On the Way to a Smile, is an antagonist in the Final Fantasy VII series. She is the Head of Weapons Development in the Shinra Electric Power Company. She is ruthless and will use any means necessary to fulfill her goals. She has a characteristic laugh ("kya ha ha!"), much like her colleague Heidegger. The two often work together, despite feelings of mutual contempt.

Profile[]

Appearance[]

Concept art by Tetsuya Nomura.

Scarlet has blonde hair and blue eyes. She wears her hair tied up. In Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII- her earrings are blue, and in Final Fantasy VII they are red. In Final Fantasy VII she has a necklace she does not wear in Before Crisis. Scarlet wears a long red satin dress that has a plunging neckline and a slit on the side and matching high heels. Under her dress she wears black thigh-high stay-up stockings. In Final Fantasy VII Remake, she wears dark eye makeup with large crystal earrings and wears a green pendant and ring; she has red nails.

Personality[]

Personally, I've never had a problem with torture.

Scarlet

Scarlet is the only female Shinra executive, and is cruel and ambitious. She is blunt and does not care if her remarks hurt others. Scarlet is unbothered by violence and often resorts to forceful means as her first choice of action to solve the problems facing herself and the Shinra Inc. She is passive towards the atrocities the Shinra Company commits, and only looks after her own status within the company. As the head of Weapons Development she is fascinated with machines and weapons of mass destruction. She exhibits dominatrix traits, using one of her subordinates as a footstool in the remake Scarlet from FFVII Remake, and in Crisis Core a SOLDIER fantasizes about being stepped on by Scarlet wearing high heels.

Working as a Shinra director[]

BCVIIScarlet.jpg

Scarlet is the director of Advanced Weaponry at Shinra. During the Wutai War, her innovative and high-end weapons brought in money and the resulting profits saw Scarlet promoted to executive officer.[2]

In Before Crisis -Final Fantasy VII- Scarlet works under President Shinra as a director of the company. She is ordered to capture Verdot after the Turks refuse to take in their commander, and is ordered to assassinate the Turks. She leads the army against them, but fails. In Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- she is mentioned briefly by a scientist in the Materia Room of the Shinra Building, who claims Scarlet wanted to close down their department and was humiliated at the next board meeting.

Scarlet oversaw the attack on the town of Corel due to blaming the residents for sabotaging the newly built Corel Reactor. She and the Shinra soldiers under her command shot Barret during his attempt to keep Dyne from falling, destroying both men’s’ arms in the process.

Original continuity[]

War against Avalanche and Sephiroth[]

Scarlet's field model in Final Fantasy VII.

When Cloud Strife and his friends storm the Shinra Building to save their friend Aerith, Scarlet participates in the executives' meeting over the collapse of Sector 7 and the plans for Neo Midgar. She is unsympathetic toward Reeve's request of rebuilding Sector 7 rebuilt. She is the only director to act suspicious, as she gazes at the ceiling vent where Cloud's group are eavesdropping the meeting.

Scarlet later embarks to Gongaga to acquire a Huge Materia to build an ultimate weapon, but considers the ruined Gongaga Reactor a dud. After Shinra deduces Sephiroth is heading towards North Crater, the new president of the company, Rufus Shinra, arranges an expedition to the area on the Highwind with Scarlet, Heidegger and Professor Hojo accompanying him. After the Meteor has been summoned, Scarlet oversees Tifa’s public execution at Junon, only for Tifa to escape the gas chamber when Sapphire Weapon attacks the city. Scarlet ends up in a slap fight with Tifa on the Mako Cannon but Tifa escapes onto the stolen Highwind.

After Sephiroth erects a barrier around the North Crater, Scarlet oversees the Mako Cannon’s transfer to Midgar to be hooked up to the mako reactors as part of Rufus's plan to destroy the barrier around the crater. She dubs the new cannon the Sister Ray (even if the name was previously seen written on the cannon in Junon). After Diamond Weapon is destroyed and Rufus presumed dead, Scarlet and Heidegger take over the company and have Reeve arrested.

When Cloud and the others return to Midgar to stop Professor Hojo from overloading the mako reactors, Scarlet and Heidegger pilot the Proud Clod developed by her department. Scarlet's plan fails as the Proud Clod is defeated and explodes. It is unknown if Scarlet and Heidegger died in the blast, but she is neither seen nor heard from again.

Deepground crisis[]

During Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII-, Scarlet is mentioned briefly with her old files being Reeve's primary source of information on Deepground. She was one of only three Shinra executives to know of the Deepground project, and presumably outfitted them with their arsenal.

Remake continuity[]

Scarlet on TV.

Scarlet appears on an TV interview after the explosion of Mako Reactor 5, asserting how Shinra will handle everything and quell Avalanche, and that the populace does not need to panic over the terrorists. During the interview Scarlet shows video footage of the Avalanche members Barret, Biggs, Jesse and Wedge infiltrating the reactor and further deduces that they're hiding in Midgar and that Shinra will apprehend them.

In "Episode INTERmission", Scarlet is one of Sonon Kusakabe and Yuffie's big adversaries. While Yuffie and Sonon enter the Shinra elevator, Scarlet and her troops step in with them. Scarlet notices Yuffie and Sonon's Wutaian attire and insults Wutai's alliance with Avalanche and expresses her displeasure to make Sonon and Yuffie angry. Yuffie gets irritated, but maintains her composure, with Scarlet complimenting Yuffie's "cute smile".

Scarlet badmouths Wutai to Yuffie and Sonon to provoke them.

As they exit the elevator, Scarlet locks the door on the Wutaian pair, knowing they're intruders. She wants to use them as test subjects to fight her autonomous weapons. Sonon, frustrated over not getting the chance to stop Scarlet, tells Yuffie about losing his sister to one of Scarlet's weapons in the Wutai War. Yuffie consoles him, telling him not to worry and that they'll complete the mission. Scarlet watches Yuffie and Sonon on her monitors, impressed they made it further than any Wutaian intruder prior, realizing they're ninjas. After her Shinra troops reveal that Yuffie and Sonon are after an ultimate materia, Scarlet decides to talk to them personally via a hologram. Scarlet tells the ninjas to get what they're after, they are going to have to fight her weaponized Shinra mechs.

Scarlet reveals herself using her hologram.

Impressed at Yuffie and Sonon defeating her robots, Scarlet meets them. Yuffie accuses Scarlet of being afraid, to which she sarcastically remarks she might be; Scarlet jumps into her personal mech called the "Crimson Mare" and fights Sonon and Yuffie. The pair prevails and blows up Scarlet's mech with Scarlet jumping out before it explodes. Backed into a corner, Scarlet activates a hidden button on her stocking to release Nero, who was kept in Shinra's Deepground capsule. Yuffie and Sonon tie Scarlet up, demanding she tell them everything she knows. Scarlet is intrigued that Wutai knows so much, suggesting they have skilled operatives or there's a mole within Shinra.

With her capture, Scarlet openly admits that the huge materia development isn't complete yet

While Sonon checks on what is happening outside the room, Scarlet admits to Yuffie that Shinra is working on a materia project, however, it isn't complete. With Yuffie still skeptical, Scarlet tells her Shinra will drop plate number 7 on the slums with Wutai and Avalanche taking the blame. Yuffie hears Sonon fighting, and an amused Scarlet tells her she better hurry before it's too late to help him. After Yuffie leaves, Scarlet escapes her bindings and leads Nero to Yuffie and Sonon's location so he can defeat them before leaving.

During Chapter 16 of the main game, "The Belly of the Beast", Scarlet oversees the development of new materia in the materia room of the Shinra Building, but leaves as things start to go wrong. She then takes part in the directors' meeting at the Shinra Building after the collapse of Sector 7 plate. She is unbothered over the casualties and uninterested in Reeve's pleas to rebuild.

Scarlet at the directors' meeting.

At the meeting she doesn't care that Professor Hojo wants to use torture to get more results out of Aerith, and dismisses Palmer's story of Sephiroth having been spotted at the Shinra Building. With the other members of Shinra, Scarlet is present when Rufus is appointed new president of the company.

Lyrics[]

Fireworks to light up your night sky
In a flash, life and love can go awry
Let me take you higher, fulfill your desires
Stilettos and lingerie both complement, supplement
In my grandeur, I'm all-natural
beneath this crimson dress
In my splendor, I'm all-natural
beneath jewels, and finesse, and elegance
What you see is what you get
Only passion, no regrets
Only triumph, I've got nothing to hide
So, sit back and enjoy the ride
What you see is what you get
Only passion, no regrets
Only triumph, I've got nothing to hide
So, sit back and enjoy the ride
Oh, what you see is what you get (what you get)
Only passion, natural
Only triumph, natural
So, sit back and enjoy the ride

Behind the scenes[]

Scarlet using a soldier as a footrest.

The scene in Final Fantasy VII Remake where Scarlet uses a Shinra infantryman for a footstool was added to show her sadistic personality and how she nor the Shinra directors as a whole do not care about abusing their positions of power over the ordinary workers.[3]

Etymology[]

Scarlet is a bright red with a slight orange tinge. Scarlet and other bright shades of red are associated with courage, force, passion, heat, and joy. In the Roman Catholic Church, scarlet is worn by a cardinal, and is associated with the blood of Christ and the Christian martyrs, and with sacrifice. Scarlet is also often associated with immorality and sin, particularly prostitution or adultery, largely because of a passage referring to "The Great Harlot", "dressed in purple and scarlet", in the Bible.
