Final Fantasy Wiki

Long sword used by holy knights.

Description

The Save the Queen is Beatrix's weapon in Final Fantasy IX that cannot be taken off her when she is in the player's party as a guest, as she cannot equip any other weapon. The player can get it in their inventory in the endgame via synthesis, but no one in the party can equip it; it is included as an Easter egg. However, it can be thrown. Unlike the other guest character weapon the player can get, the Hammer, the Save the Queen does not affect the ending scenes. Though the sword's attack power is low, it has a special damage algorithm that adds the user's level to its Attack power, making it the strongest weapon if the user was around or above level 85.

The sword is based on the sword of the same name from Final Fantasy Tactics.

Obtain[]

The Save the Queen can synthesized through Hades in Memoria (in the ocean area, behind the formations on the right), but no party member can equip it. The player needs to find and defeat Hades in Memoria, and then interact with him again to open up the Legendary Synthesist Shop. To make the Save the Queen, the player needs 50,000 gil, a Javelin, and a Silver Gloves.

Mechanics[]

The base damage dealt with normal attack is determined as follows:

Base = (23 + Level) - Enemy's Defense
Bonus = Strength + Rnd MOD ([(Level + Strength) / 8] + 1)
Damage = Base * Bonus

Where Rnd means a random number, while MOD means modulus operation. "Rnd MOD x" can be read as a random number between 0 and x-1.

The damage is then modified by variables like Beatrix's row position, and the enemy's Protect. If Beatrix was under Mini, her Bonus would be 1.

Beatrix is only in the player's party for a limited time, and thus the player cannot see the weapon's true potential with a high-level user. The player will also use her to fight Mistodons when she is last available, which she could defeat with White Magic rather than using her sword.

Use[]

Save the Queen is a weapon that only Beatrix can use. She wields it for the brief time she is in the player's party as a guest during the "rescuing Garnet" scenario, partnered with Freya, and in the Battle of Alexandria scenario, partnered with Steiner. It also appears on her in cutscenes and during the times the player fights her as a boss.

The player can make it as an extra item to hold in the endgame for completion's sake, but there is no specific purpose of having it. It does not add any treasure hunter rank points.

Tetra Master[]

#078
Location: Black Mage Village (Black Mage 24, Black mage no.189)
Daguerreo (Adventurer)
Treno (Card Stadium "Gambler Grecchio" and "Weapon Master Hunt")

Save the Queen is one of the few weapons in Final Fantasy IX to have a Tetra Master card. The player can get it from Black Mages No.24 and No.189 in Black Mage Village, who play it rarely in the endgame. The same deck is also used by the Adventurer in Daguerreo. It is also won from the Treno Card Stadium, from Gambler Grecchio after the party returns from the Outer Continent, and from Weapon Master Hunt in the endgame.

Behind the scenes[]

Before the battle in Cleyra, Beatrix is holding her sword in her right hand, however, at the same time it is still in its holder on the back of her jacket. This also happens when Beatrix attempts to resign her position as general at the end of the game, leaving Save the Queen in Garnet's room, but still having it on her back when she leaves the castle. In the final cutscene when Beatrix and Steiner lift Save the Queen together, she still has it in the holder as well.

Etymology and origin[]

God Save the Queen is the anthem used in a number of Commonwealth realms, their territories, and the British Crown Dependencies. Beatrix's sword is named as such due to her role in protecting the queens of Alexandria, Brahne Raza Alexandros XVI and Garnet Til Alexandros XVII.
