Restores HP. It cannot be used in the field. Equip as an Add-on.

Description

The Sapphire is a jewel in Final Fantasy IX that everyone can equip as an add-on, which can also be used during battle as a healing item. It teaches Fenrir to Eiko and High Tide to everyone. Eiko joins the party with a Sapphire already equipped. Amassing Sapphires in the inventory makes Fenrir stronger when summoned.

Obtain[]

A Sapphire is first obtained as part of the story when Eiko joins. It also drops from Drakan, Gnoll, Red Dragon, Eiko (Mirror), and Iron Man, and is stolen from Eiko (Mirror) as well. Bringing Eiko to Oeilvert allows the player to farm Sapphires from her doppelganger.

ChocographLoc19

Outer Island 2 chocograph.

Eleven Sapphires are found in Outer Island 2 chocograph treasure, while fifteen are found in Cold Lagoon chocograph treasure ChocographLoc22.

Sapphires are synthesized in Daguerreo, Black Mage Village (endgame), and the Legendary Synthesis Shop for 200 gil, an Ore, and an Antidote. Antidotes are bought in shops, whereas Eiko can manufacture infinite Ores with Jewel.

Mechanics[]

The Sapphire can be used as an item during battle, to restore HP equivalent to the total stock of Sapphires x76. Jewels are the only healing items that work on Zombiefied/undead targets. It can be a powerful healing item, but is unaffected by Chemist and cannot be used while in the field.

Holding onto many Sapphires makes Fenrir's summon attacks stronger; Terrestrial Rage attack power = 42 + No. of Sapphires, while Millennial Decay attack power = 44 + No. of Sapphires.

Use[]

The Sapphire is useful for learning Fenrir and High Tide and for making Fenrir's summon attack stronger by holding onto a large stock of them. High Tide is not a high priority support ability to learn, but Fenrir is a good eidolon for Eiko. As Eiko starts with the Sapphire, she can impress her new traveling companions by summoning mid-battle. After mastering Fenrir from a Sapphire, Eiko can change its summon attack to Millennial Decay by equipping a Maiden Prayer.

As jewels do not grant stats, the player should unequip them after mastering the abilities they hold. The Sapphire is also a very powerful healing item the player can use mid-battle.

Etymology and origin[]

Sapphire is a gemstone variety of the mineral corundum, an aluminium oxide. It is the birthstone for September. The jewels are based on real life birthstones. As such, when equipping as an add-on and if the player has all twelve jewels in their inventory (minus Ore), the jewels are listed in the same order as the birthstones where each gemstone represents a month.
