Samurai is an Attacker-type job that excels at MP management while delivering deadly physical blows. It serves as an extension of the Ronin job with the exception of Iai-giri, keeping the heavy break damage and the added bonus of MP recovery for more combo abilities to use. This job rewards concise parry timing and careful playstyles through passives that activate via parries, such as an increase in physical damage, faster break gauge recovery, and greater ability damage.

[Any Link] Can be set to any link ability slot.
Meikyo-Shisui grants the Samurai a buff that increases the MP recovery from attacks and grants bonus MP from parrying attacks. This job action rewards careful methods combat as it grants greater physical damage upon parrying, but immediately ends its effects when you are staggered.
Upon obtaining its mastery, it provides an even greater time window for parrying attacks.
Temporarily reduces the MP cost of combo abilities.
The Samurai obtains the Zanshin support ability, which reduces the MP consumed when activating your combo abilities. This ability is a great addition to other martial jobs that focus on dealing several attacks at a fast rate. With the access to Senshin Stance, the Samurai benefits greatly due to the net gain in MP and longer combos.
The Samurai makes sole use of the Katanas (upon the release of the Different Future DLC, guns were added to its repertoire retroactively), keeping the Ronin's knack for slow but heavy damage and having its combo effects focus on MP management from physical damage and replenishing MP from soul bursts.

Gameplay[]
The Samurai is a rather defensive Attacker-type job that focuses on the use of parrying to avoid damage and countering with strong combo abilities with the MP gained from said defenses. The job can be seen as a tank-DPS job as it benefits the most from parrying due to the negated damage, but is rather weak without said defenses. Samurai can serve as a good source of DPS for mid-levels parties with passives that an increase in physical damage, faster break gauge recovery, and greater ability damage.
Strengths[]
Combo Strings. The Samurai can deal consistent damage with the endless combo abilities that come with the Katana's Senshin Stance and benefits the most from the properties that come with said stance.
MP Management. The Samurai's job action can prove a good asset for jobs that require melee combat playstyle and parry timing, also making for a good parry tank.
Chain Cancels. The Power of Perseverance affinity bonus is a staple to job synergies leading to even greater DPS. In addition, the Genji's Master's Mentality provides another source of MP management.
Weaknesses[]
Punishing Defense. Due to the nature of parries and Senshin, poor timing might deem this job an unattractive choice for those who cannot block well.
Stats[]
The Samurai's stat bonus is both Strength and Agility, allowing for stronger physical damage and even stronger critical damage.
Monk can bolster the Samurai's potent break damage it deals from its Agility and critical bonuses with the power of the Focus ability. The Monk's stats compliment Samurais well and provide a moderate boost in total HP and means of quick attacks.
The Knight is one of the best jobs to pair with the Samurai as its Blessing of Light job ability can be activated along side Meikyo-Shisui, leading to holy damage being dealt when parrying as the Samurai as well as both HP and MP being recovered as a result. The Knight's stats also ensure survivability as the job has one of the highest base Stamina values in the game.
White Mage can prove to be a good sub job for more martial jobs that specialize in close-range combat from the heals and buffs that come from its White spells. Extra magic defense from the Shell spell and physical defense from the Protect can help to make up for the Samurais poor defensive stats, making the mistakes from poor parry and combo timing that much less punishing.
The Breaker can pair well with the Samurai job with the Zantetsuken Mastery ability. Both jobs have passives that allow them to soul burst enemies through combo effects as well as powerful abilities that scale off of the Strength stat.
[Attack Type: Slash] [Stat Bonus: Strength/Agility] Launch enemies into the air and perform an upward slash. This attack covers a large distance and knocks enemies back.
[Attack Type: Slash] [Stat Bonus: Agility/Strength] Deliver two lightning-fast iai-giri slashes to savage your enemy. For a brief moment as you unleash your attacks, you will also guard against attacks.
[view·edit·purge]Samurai were the military nobility of medieval and early-modern Japan. They were not just great swordsmen, but also powerful horse archers and martial artists of other fields. Though their status was that above commoners, samurai were bound to forms of etiquette and a way of life known as Bushido, stressing honor to one's devoted and preparing oneself in the face of death.
