Samidare is a non-playable character in Final Fantasy XIV. He is the member of the Passage of the Unbound who stole the Dreamweave Cocoon. Samidare is the antagonist during the Melee DPS role quests in the Dawntrail expansion.

History[]

Before Dawntrail[]

Samidare was one of the Doman ninja who fought to defend Doma against the invasion of the Garlean Empire twenty-five years ago, even fighting alongside guardian of Doma, Tamamo Gozen. However, their efforts were in vain, and Doma fell to the Empire's overwhelming force. Soon after the occupation began, Samidare was recruited into the Garlean army and forced to become a spy. He worked to fan the flames of war in distant lands through rumors and manipulation.[1]

It was only after the prisoner exchange that he finally returned to Doma, but he was a changed man. Samidare could no longer find joy or solace in peace. He sought to destroy peace, claiming that he wanted to prove that "civility is but a facade to hide the savagery of man." Samidare spread lies to try to turn people against each other, and before he could be confronted by his childhood friend Subaru, he fled. Samidare had received a letter from the Passage of the Unbound inviting him to join the organization.[1]

Samidare was one of Apyaahi's guests who joined her villainous group. Apyaahi revealed the existence of sacred artifacts around Tural. These artifacts contain the essence of fearsome beasts called Tural Vidraal, and said that with the power of the artifacts they could achieve their goal.[2]

Kuiyki and Samidare from FFXIV

Samidare stealing the Dreamweave Cocoon.

Samidare had learned of a treasure called the Dreamweave Cocoon, which granted its wielder the ability to transform into anyone. Following Apyaahi's instructions, Samidare entered the forests of Xak Tural, where the artifact was kept by a Shetona village. When a huntress named Kuiyki left the village with the Cocoon, Samidare took advantage of her innocence. As Kuiyki was returning to the village, she came across Samidare, who appeared to have fallen unconscious. When Kuiyki approached to help him, Samidare knocked her out and stole the Cocoon.[1]

Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail[]

Samidare falchon from FFXIV

Samidare fleeing after transforming into a falcon.

Samidare returned to Kugane and began using the power of the Cocoon to transform into various people and cause chaos. In one incident, Samidare transformed into the wife of a samurai and started claiming that another samurai had harassed her. Before the conflict could turn fatal, the Warrior of Light and Kuiyki arrived on the scene. Kuiyki threw medicine at Samidare that revealed his true appearance. Unfazed by his foiled plan, Samidare used the Cocoon to transform into a falcon and fled. Kuiyki attempted to shoot him down with an arrow but missed. The Sekiseigumi thanked her for revealing the perpetrator, promising to spread the story of his crimes among the populace and redouble their efforts to keep them safe.[3]

Samidare in Ruby Sea from FFXIV

Samidare using the Cocoon after his identity was revealed.

Samidare fled to the Ruby Sea, and using the Cocoon, he tricked both the Bakufu and Confederate soldiers into thinking that the other had invaded their borders. The Warrior of Light and Kuiyki traveled to the location and began investigating the incidents. They discovered that Captain Rasho had been acting strangely lately, expressing intentions to besiege Ruby Price. The sudden change in his behavior led Kuiyki to believe that Samidare might have taken on his form. Upon meeting with Rasho in person, Kuiyki once again used her medicine to expose Samidare. After a discussion, Samidare revealed his intention to use the Dreamweave Cocoon to uncover the truth of the world—that people are cruel at heart. As he fled, Kuiyki attempted to strike him down but missed again.[4]

Samidare went to Doma and disguised himself as Lord Hien. He tried to incite an invasion of Nagxia, but Yugiri quickly saw through the ruse and exposed Samidare, who then transformed into a hawk and fled. Samidare then infiltrated Yanxia. He disguised himself as the Warrior of Light and asked for directions to the House of the Fierce, where he attempted to incite the Doman ninja to go to war with the Azim Steppe. The real Warrior of Light arrived on the scene, and Kuiyki used her medicine to reveal Samidare's true appearance. He transformed into a hawk to escape. Kuiyki shot again to stop him but missed the arrow. The Warrior of Light then asked if Kuiyki was really the hunter I'toca. The question caught Samidare's attention, and before escaping, he revealed that the real I'toca was already dead at his hands and that she was an impostor.[1]

Samidare as Kuiyki from FFXIV

Samidare disguised as Kuiyki after trying to stab the Warrior of Light.

Eventually Samidare transformed into Kuiyki and tried to ambush the Warrior of Light in Hells' Lid. The moment the Warrior of Light looked away, Kuiyki prepared to stab them, but the real Kuiyki rushed in and attacked the double, revealing that it was Samidare in disguise. Fed up that his plan had been foiled yet again, Samidare vowed to prepare a more thorough method of assassination for their next encounter before flying off like a bird.[5]

Samidare once again assumed the appearance of the Warrior of Light and went to Mol Iloh, claiming that Hien had gone mad. Samidare said that Hien was gathering an army in Doma with plans to conquer the Azim Steppe. Unfortunately for Samidare, a Doman messenger had already brought news of his trickery. The Mol realized that Samidare was an impostor, and when they tried to capture him, he transformed into a sheep and disappeared among the flocks grazing on the plains. After the incident, Cirina of the Mol visited Kugane to report what had happened to the real Warrior of Light.[6]

Samidare arrested from FFXIV

Samidare being arrested.

Samidare transformed into Sadu of the Dotharl and tried to seduce Magnai of the Oronir into invading Doma. Just as he was about to succeed, the Warrior of Light and Kuiyki interrupted the plan and the conversation, and Samidare told Magnai that they were spies for Doma. Magnai was confused because the Warrior of Light was the khagan of the Steppe. Losing patience, Samidare knocked out Magnai and assumed the form of the deceased I'toca to confront the Warrior of Light and Kuiyki. Samidare transformed into a series of fearsome fighters, even taking on the form of Tamamo Gozen herself. Realizing that victory was out of reach, Samidare transformed into a falcon and tried to escape but was shot down by Kuiyki. Samidare was then arrested by Oronir warriors, and Magnai promised to ensure that Samidare would be punished for his crimes.[6]

Personality[]

A broken man who no longer believes in peace, Samidare now strives to sow as much discord and disrupt peace as he can, mainly with his lies. He joined the Passage of the Unbound mainly just to spread as much lies as he can, holding misanthropic views that people are cruel and savage at heart and that civility and peace are nothing more than facades.

Though a skilled and deadly ninja and can hide easily enough, when using the Dreamweave Cocoon to appear as anyone, Samidare's efforts to act the part of who he is impersonating are considered abysmal, with only the most gullible falling for his ruse.

Gameplay[]

Silvertongue Samidare is fought in the special instance during the Melee DPS role quest A Hunter True A Hunter True at level 100.
