Harpoon Hurl from FFVII Remake

Harpoon Hurl.

Sahagins are aggressive enemies that boast high defense attributes. Their main attack is the Jump ability, which can deal high damage and knock down characters if they're not blocking. When fought in high numbers, they can quickly overpower players with a succession of Jumps, effectively stunlocking the party.

Sahagins can hurl their harpoons at their victims, and cast a spell called Salientian Curse, both which can inflict Toad Toad. Upon throwing their spears they will temporarily fight unarmed, losing the ability to use Jump until retrieving their weapon, and will instead perform a significantly weaker attack called Flying Kick.

Unlike most biological creatures, sahagins are weak to Fire Fire, although they do take slightly increased stagger damage from Ice Ice.

Strategy[]

Sahagins can be dangerous, specially in the sewers where there is little room to maneuver and avoid their attacks. Jump can only be avoided by running very far from the sahagins, so it is best to block to mitigate the damage, or by dodging backwards at the last second. Harpoon Hurl and Salientian Curse both can be dodged, and the sahagins will be briefly vulnerable after it. When they lose their harpoons it is the best time to press the attack, as they won't be as oppressive.

Despite their high physical and magic defenses, magic works best against them. During Chapter 10, the party's best spellcaster is Aerith, who can also augment her spells with Arcane Ward and Fleeting Familiar. In Chapter 14, the party's best spellcaster is Cloud. Sahagin can be also be pressured using Tifa's Unbridled Strength martial techniques.

When the sahagins appear alongside scissorclaw, the player can use fire or ice spells (sahagins are weak to fire, the scissorclaws are weak to ice) with Magnify Materia Magnify Materia to damage both groups of enemies, as both sport hard shells and resist physical damage. Though the sahagins are not weak to Ice Ice, blizzard spells still stagger them quicker than wind or thunder.

Hard Mode[]

On the hard difficulty, the sahagins will be even more aggressive, using Jump and Salientian Curse more often. They'll be more resilient and harder to interrupt.

Aerith can pair Fire materia with MP Absorption Materia MP Absorption Materia or HP Absorption Materia HP Absorption Materia and focus on spellcasting while using Arcane Ward. With First Strike Materia First Strike Materia and ATB Boost Materia ATB Boost Materia, Aerith can open every battle with Arcane Ward, followed by ATB Boost, and then use Fira Fira to instantly stagger or destroy one of the sahagin, allowing Tifa and Cloud to finish them off.

Cloud or Tifa can either pair Fire materia with Elemental Materia Elemental Materia or spellcast themselves from within Aerith's ward. Cloud in particular can deal massive damage to the sahagins by using Counterstance when they Jump.

Since the final combat challenge of Chapter 10 is against sahagins, the player is free to expend all MP here.

In Chapter 14, Parry Materia Parry Materia is ideal to avoid the sahagin's Jump attacks for Tifa, while Cloud and Barret equip Steadfast Block Materia Steadfast Block Materia.
