Sadness is a status in Final Fantasy VII. Sadness makes the affected target take 30% less damage from physical and magical attacks, but also halves the rate at which the Limit gauge fills. The effect can be positive or negative, depending on the party's situation. Sadness is the opposite of Fury. When a character is under Sadness status, their Limit bar is displayed in blue, rather than the normal pink. Sadness and Fury both persist after battle and can be healed/inflicted in the menu with Tranquilizer/Hyper.

Use[]

Sadness is a powerful defensive status for the player to utilize, at the cost of fewer Limits occurring. By utilizing Sadness in addition to the back row, the player can significantly reduce the amount of physical damage received from enemies, and with the correct setup, can deal full damage from the back row to any enemy, including the use of magic, items, long-range weapons, or the Long Range Materia. Since the player can apply the status at any time by using the Tranquilizer, they will always have access to the status, and can apply it outside of battle as well.
