S-mine can be used by the player in the form of the S-mine item, which inflicts moderate non-elemental damage to one target. It can be bought for 1000 gil at Fort Condor, Costa del Sol, and Rocket Town after acquiring Highwind, for 3200 BP at the Battle Square in the Gold Saucer only when Tiny Bronco is available, stolen from Attack Squad, and won from Gun Carrier and Submarine Crew.

The German S-mine (Schrapnellmine, Springmine or Splittermine in German), also known as the "Bouncing Betty", is the best-known version of a class of mines known as bounding mines. When triggered, these mines launch into the air and then detonate at about 0.9 meters (3 ft). The explosion projects a lethal spray of shrapnel in all directions.
