Rullus eir Varus is non-player character in Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker. He was Drusilla's grandfather and the best and most feared Reaper in history. Rullus was consumed by his own avatar and became the voidsent known as Orcus.

History[]

Early life[]

Rullus and Solus from FFXIV

Rullus trying to assassinate Emperor Solus.

Rullus was the best soldier in Reaper unit of Garlemald. According to the Reapers' teachings, it was their duty to free their countrymen from corrupt and power-hungry tyrants. During the Garlean campaign, as Solus zos Galvus aggressively expanded the territory, Rullus was one of those who stood against the Emperor. Rullus decided to assassinate Emperor Solus, and twenty years ago, sneaked into the imperial palace only to fail in his mission. Rullus returned nervous and his black hair turned pale white. He revealed nothing of his meeting with the Emperor, except that "the Emperor was no man at all".

Ashamed of his defeat, Rullus sought more power, and gradually gave himself more to the voidsent behind his avatar. In that moment of weakness, his voidsent avatar consumed him and turned him into Orcus. His family were the first victims of Orcus. Drusilla was the only survivor at the cost of her own voidsent avatar, which was consumed by Orcus in her place.[1]

Final Fantasy XIV: Endwalker[]

Drusilla fled to Eorzea where she formed a new family, the Lemures, a group formed by Garleans living in exile. Since she no longer had her avatar, she was no match for Orcus. Seeking revenge, Drusilla trained the Warrior of Light as a Reaper. Knowing that Drusilla was looking for him, Orcus sent his minions as a warning and murdered Arnegis, one of Drusilla's new companions.

Orcus revealed himself to Drusilla and the Warrior of Light, proclaiming to feast on Drusilla's new family, showing particular interest in the Warrior of Light's aether. He disappeared after leaving the warning. After saving a couple from Orcus's voidsents, the Warrior returned to the headquarters where Orcus reappeared and kidnapped Drusilla to stoke the Warrior's wrath.

Eventually, a letter written with Drusilla's blood arrived in the Lemures headquarters. Orcus challenged the Warrior into a duel in the Dusk Vigil. Grabbing Drusilla's scythe, the Warrior of Light departed. During the duel Orcus empowered himself. While he was gloating, the Warrior threw Drusilla's scythe back to her and they fought Orcus together. He was defeated and Drusilla finally killed him.[2]

Characteristics[]

Appearance[]

Orcus takes on the appearance of his host with a tattered hood and cloak. He has pale gray skin around his face and parts of his chest, but the rest of his body is shown to be a dark purple with red sections around his limbs resembling a player's enshrouded form. As Orcus he wields the Death Scythe. As Rullus he was a garlean man with long black hair and cream-colored highlights. He wears the Reaper's Corselet and wields the Death Sickle before his possession.

Personality[]

Orcus has an insatiable desire for aether. He feasts on the aether of those he kills, but not before leaving them in the greatest possible despair. To do this, Orcus leaves warnings that he is coming and tortures his victims before devouring them.
