Ruinga is a magic ability for Lightning in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. It is the upgraded form of the Ruin spell, dealing magic non-elemental damage to all enemies within a large radius.

Ruinga is also used when the player performs the Cosmocrator garb's Cosmic Arts command.

Obtained[]

The Vigilance garb purchasable from rare Forge shop has Ruinga Lv. 3 as its locked ability.

A Ruinga Lv. 2 can be found in a treasure sphere located in the lower levels of the War Cage within Temple of the Goddess.

Ruinga can be obtained as a drop from several enemies. The Meonekton and Earth Eaters drop the ability with a 22.5% rate. The Sugrivas naturally drop the ability with a 15% drop rate, but can be increased to 20% after being staggered. The Sugriva Ω will always drop the ability with a 100% chance. The enemies drop different levels of the ability on the following days and difficulties:

Enemy Lv. 1 Lv. 2 Lv. 3 Lv. 4 Lv. 5
Meonekton Day 7 - 9 (Easy/Normal) Day 10 - 13 (Easy/Normal) Day 1 - 6 (Hard) Day 7 - 12 (Hard) Day 13 (Hard)
Earth Eater Day 1 - 6 (Easy/Normal) Day 7 - 9 (Easy/Normal) Day 10 - 13 (Easy/Normal) Day 1 - 6 (Hard) Day 7 - 13 (Hard)
Sugriva Day 13 (Easy/Normal) - - Day 13 (Hard) -
Sugriva Ω - - Day 13 (Easy/Normal) - Day 13 (Hard)

Mechanics[]

When used, Lightning launches an orb of energy that implodes, releasing a cloudy explosion that deals magic non-elemental damage to all targets within a large radius. If the targets are inflicted with the Curse status, they have a higher chance of being launched into the air. Unlike the default Ruin, Ruinga has a higher stagger power, but at the cost of losing the ability of sustaining an enemy's stagger wave.

By default, Ruinga Lv. 1 has an ATB cost of 50, an attack power of 1.50, a Stagger Power of B, and a Stagger Time of E. When fully upgraded, Ruinga Lv. 5 at max has an ATB cost of 30, an attack power of 8.85, a Stagger Power of B, and a Stagger Time of E.

The Aeronite, Grendel, Parandus, Sugriva, and Sugriva Ω enemies also use Ruinga against Lightning. It is also used by all versions of the game's final boss during the fight's first phase.

Behind the scenes[]

Ruinga Guard from LRFFXIII

The Paladin's Ruinga Guard ability.

While the Paladin has access to an auto-ability known as Ruinga Guard, the ability is not actually related to the spell. The ability is known as Guard Time Magic Revenge (ガード時間で魔法リベンジ, Gādo Jikan de Mahō Ribenji?) in the Japanese releases, sharing a similar name to the Revenge Guard auto-ability exclusive to the Death Herald and Executioner's Axe weapons, even sharing the same animation.
