Etymology[]

A ruby is a pink to blood-red colored gemstone, a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide). It is the birthstone for July. In this instance, the word ruby refers to the dragon's color.

A dragon is a legendary creature, typically with serpentine or reptilian traits, which is featured in the myths of many cultures.

Claret is a deep purplish-red colour, like that of the red wine produced in the Bordeaux region of France.

Its Japanese name translates to Rubrum Dragon. Rubrum is Latin for "(the) red".

The colored dragons in Final Fantasy derive from Dungeons & Dragons, where red dragon is one of the chromatic evil-aligned dragons, and gem dragons are neutral, Sardior the Ruby Dragon being their deity.
