Ring with a fire god's spirit dwelling inside.

Description

The Rosetta Ring is a mid to endgame add-on in Final Fantasy IX that everyone can equip. It teaches Concentrate, which raises the potency of healing magic; Level Up, which lets the character gain more EXP from enemies; and Reflectx2 that allows Vivi boost his spells by reflecting them. The Rosetta Ring gives a small bonus to the wearer's Magic when they level up with it equipped and it makes the wearer absorb Fire damage. It is made via synthesis and is also used in synthesis itself to make the ultimate light armor headgear.

Obtain[]

Lost continent crack

Mountain crack on the Lost Continent.

The Rosetta Ring can earliest be obtained from using a Dead Pepper at a mountain crack at the eastern part of Lost Continent while riding Choco. The player can get it after they have Blue Narciss and they progress Chocobo Hot and Cold to the point Dead Peppers become available.

The Rosetta Ring is also bequeathed by Queen Stella in Treno after giving her 10 Stellazzio coins.

Friendly Yan.

A Rosetta Ring is also rewarded from the friendly monsters sidequest. After appeasing all other friendly monsters, the player can give the Friendly Yan a Diamond on Vile Island. Alternatively, the party can defeat the Friendly Yan and receive the Rosetta Ring as a drop; despite this, the player can still meet the Friendly Yan again and either appease it or defeat it again. By repeatedly defeating the Friendly Yan, the player can acquire endless Rosetta Rings. However, Friendly Yan is possibly the toughest enemy to defeat in the entire game, even stronger than Ozma.

It is also synthesized in Black Mage Village in the end of the game for 24,000 gil, a Madain's Ring, and a Holy Lance. The Madain's Ring is synthesized in Mist Continent synthesis shops, and the Holy Lance is bought from Daguerreo.

Mechanics[]

The Rosetta Ring gives Defense +1, Magic Defense +3, physical Evasion +2, and Magic Evasion +2. It gives a +1 bonus to the wearer's Magic stat when they level with it equipped. When enough "bonuses" upon level up from gear have been accrued, the character gains a permanent stat increase. Magic is used for calculating spells' outcomes and determining MP growth.

The ring absorbs Fire damage to the wearer.

Use[]

The Rosetta Ring has good abilities to learn. Concentrate is good for healers, Level Up is good for grinding, and Reflectx2 is good for Vivi to boost the power of his spells, and couples well with Auto-Reflect.

The ring's Fire-absorption is good against Maliris and the final boss. However, Ribbon and Protect Ring would be better elemental protection add-ons overall.

The ring's level up bonus falls short of other add-ons. Level grinding and min-maxing are unnecessary for a normal playthrough even when preparing for superboss encounters; the player can view any extra stats as simply a nice bonus. The best stat-boosting items are available at the end of the game, and so for the best stats one would need to restrict their EXP intake until near the end of the game.

The Rosetta Ring can be used in synthesis at the end of the game to make the Circlet.

Etymology and origin[]

The Rosetta Stone is a famous slab containing Egyptian hieroglyphic, demotic, and Greek text, that was discovered in Egypt in 1799 and deciphered by Jean-François Champollion. It was instrumental in deciphering the lost language of Egyptian hieroglyphics. The Rosetta Ring in Final Fantasy IX is likely in reference to the "Rosetta Stone" item from the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy VIII.
