Throwing weapon, more powerful than the Pinwheel. It is used with the command 'Throw' and cannot be equipped.

Description

The Rising Sun is a throwing weapon for Amarant in Final Fantasy IX. It is used via Throw and consumed upon use, but is usually stronger than using Attack. It is stronger than the Pinwheel, but weaker than the Wing Edge.

Small Beach chocograph.

The Rising Sun is sold for 500 gil in Desert Palace, Esto Gaza (after Desert Palace), Daguerreo, Ipsen's Castle, and Bran Bal. It is found in Oeilvert, Chocograph 11: Small Beach, and sometimes as a rare treasure when playing Chocobo Hot and Cold. Small Beach can be reached when the party has the Blue Narciss and contains eight Rising Suns. They can also be stolen from the Grand Dragon, but it is the rarest item: Zidane will struggle to get it without Master Thief.

Mechanics[]

Throw deals physical non-elemental damage to one enemy. The Rising Sun's damage is calculated as follows:

Base = 36 * 2 - Enemy's Defense
Bonus = Strength + A random number 0 ... [(Level + Strength) / 8]
Damage = Base * Bonus

Bonus is reduced to 1 if Amarant is in Mini status, and is halved on a target with the Protect status. The Bonus will be 50% greater if the target is an aerial enemy, or if Amarant is equipped with the Power Throw ability. These effects also stack. If Amarant equips Healer, damage is converted to healing.

Use[]

The Rising Sun is good against tough enemies, like bosses, as well as flying enemies. The player can buy them from Desert Palace onwards if they have the funds to spare, though Amarant is likely better sent to Oeilvert, against whose boss Throw is good against. The Rising Sun is Amarant's best throwing weapon that can be consumed fairly wantonly as the player can always buy more of them, whereas the stronger Wind Edge is harder to come by.

When thrown, the weapon's Attack value is doubled in the damage calculation, meaning they should be about twice as strong when used via Throw than when used with the Attack command. The Rising Sun's power is comparable to throwing the physically attacking party members' mid-game equipment, available around the time the player has the Blue Narciss, or to using most endgame equipment via Attack without enhancements, though Zidane and Steiner's best weapons are stronger still than the Rising Sun. When Amarant can do more damage with Attack, Rising Sun is less relevant, such as with the Kaiser Knuckles. Bird Killer adds the same bonus against aerial enemies with Attack as Throw has innately. The one boon that remains is that with Throw, Amarant can be in the back row without damage penalty. In the endgame Amarant can equip Power Throw to do supreme damage, but hogs a sizeable portion of his Magic Stones.

Etymology[]

The Japanese word for the country of Japan is Nippon that literally means "the sun's origin", and is often translated as the Land of the Rising Sun. This nomenclature comes from Imperial correspondence with Chinese Sui Dynasty and refers to Japan's eastward position relative to China. "Rising sun" may also simply refer to sunrise.
