Summon a fiery wing that deals damage and can launch lighter enemies into the air.
Description
Rising Flames is one of Clive's default abilities in Final Fantasy XVI that the player can assign to his loadout. Clive will sprout the wing of a Phoenix and launch an enemy into the air with a powerful swipe should the enemy be small enough to be launched. Following up with a 4-hit sword attack combo leads to the Rising Combo battle technique. Rising Flames can also break through and enemy's block. The ability has a short cooldown among Clive's Eikonic Abilities, making it generally useful to have equipped and seeing a lot of use in the beginning of the game.
Obtained[]
Clive has Rising Flames unlocked since the start of the game, as a result of having Blessing of the Phoenix from Joshua Rosfield. The player can refund skills to get their AP cost back and re-buy them at will.
Mechanics[]
Clive can use Rising Flames in battle whenever it is equipped to his current loadout. Clive can have two Eikonic Abilities alongside his Eikonic Feat, which for the fire loadout is Phoenix Shift.
Rising Flames has Clive launch a small enemy into the air, dealing damage. Rising Flames can also break through an enemy's block. Upgrading the ability has Rising Flames deliver more hits.
Rising Flames activates the battle technique, Rising Combo, when used to lift an enemy into the air and then chaining into a 4-hit sword combo.
After being used, the ability has a 20-second cooldown before being able to be used again. Upgrading/mastering the ability has no effect on its cooldown.
AP cost | Effect |
---|---|
Already learned | Able to equip Rising Flames to Clive's fire loadout. |
500 (Upgrade) | Delivers more hits. |
1000 (Master) | Able to equip Rising Flames to any loadout. |
Because the only reward for mastering the Eikonic Ability is the chance to use it on a different Eikon's loadout, there is little point doing it until Clive acquires more Eikons. For Phoenix's trial, Rising Flames is automatically mastered, regardless of its status in Clive's menu.
Use[]
Rising Flames is likely Clive's frequently used Eikonic Ability in the early game. It can be used to interrupt a single small foe by lifting them into the air, and then following it up with normal attacks. The player can then dodge to cancel the animation of the final hit. The player can also chain into the downward attack to finish and aerial combo. Rising Flames is also useful against an enemy who is guarding.
As Rising Flames recharges fast, the player can use it often. In the beginning of the game Clive will have two Eikonic abilities, Rising Flames and Scarlet Cyclone; the player can approach a group of enemies, use Scarlet Cyclone first to damage them, and then follow up with Rising Flames, and combo into Rising Combo if possible.
After Clive gets new Eikons, Rising Flames can fall out of favor, and the player can still use Torgal's commands to launch enemies at will. However, it can still remain a useful addition to the player's loadout for the entire game, as small enemies still appear until the end of game and interrupting them with launching is always useful, and Rising Flames is fairly powerful despite being a default ability, and it has such a short cooldown without needing to time it.
During the chronolith trial with the Phoenix's abilities, triggering Rising Finish by killing enemies with this ability gains a +12s time bonus.

Rising Flames appears as an action available to Clive and the Warrior of Light during Memory of Embers, part of the Final Fantasy XVI crossover event The Path Infernal. While a standard ability for Clive that deals light damage, when used as a duty action by the Warrior it inflicts 3% max HP fractional damage, serving as their hardest hitting attack during the battle.
Etymology[]
The name may be intended to evoke the imagery of the Phoenix rising from the ashes, play on the ability being used to raise enemies into the air.
