Riku is competitive with his friend and rival Sora, but his jealousy over the close friendship between Sora and Kairi contributed to his fall to darkness. He admits a major reason he was so competitive with Sora growing up was because he secretly worried he was inferior.
Following his reformation, Riku is impervious to the corrupting influences of darkness, something that is implied to have never been accomplished before, and he wields his dark powers to combat the darkness itself. This philosophy, and Riku's search for redemption, is reflected in the name of his Keyblade, "The Way to the Dawn," symbolizing light emerging from darkness.
