Revival materia grants two revival spells. The base spell, Raise, will revive a character at partial HP, while Arise will revive them at full HP. Arise is therefore more ATB-efficient, as it will revive and fully heal a character in a single ATB use, whereas a curative spell from the Healing Materia will be required to restore a character at full HP otherwise.
In addition to providing spells, revival materia also provides several stat boosts, including +2 to max MP, +2 to Magic Attack, +1 to Magic Defense, +1 to Magic attribute, and +1 to Spirit. Because of these, boosts, revival materia is slightly better on characters that are being built towards spellcasting. This depends on their equipped weapon, though Aerith Gainsborough is often best for this due to her high MP and magic attribute, as well as the abundance of materia slots in her weapons.
It is best for at least one character to have revival materia equipped, and said character should be durable to keep the party alive. Normally, Aerith and Barret are good candidates, both because they are ranged characters able to avoid damage, because of Aerith's high MP, and because of Barret's high HP and abilities that reduce damage. Equipping the materia provides security in many situations.
Revival materia is one of the slowest materia to level up to Arise, which is a useful spell. This means it can be paired with AP Up Materia on a character who equips it.
