Etymology and allusion[]

In-universe, the name refers to the Reunion Theory where those "treated" with Jenova cells would seek to reunite in Final Fantasy VII. As continuation of this, in Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children the remnants of Sephiroth want to reunite with the remains of Jenova, unaware this instinct is actually being driven by Sephiroth.

The Reunion Theory itself has some allusions to mysticism and religion, and Gnosticism is heavily alluded in the themes of Final Fantasy VII. Hojo's Reunion Theory, where entities infused with Jenova's cells will reunite with Jenova/Sephiroth at the North Crater, stems from the Gnosticist concept of each human having a fragment of God, being divine souls trapped in the material world. In the world of Final Fantasy VII, Sephiroth wants to create "eternity" and all to be one with him (Sephiroth Reborn's assessment in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth reads: "He seeks to pierce through the layers of existence and reunite fragmented space-time. He shall rule over the planet and create eternity.")
