The Resonant (超越者, Chōetsu-sha?, lit. Transcender) are supersoldiers in Final Fantasy XIV imbued with a powerful artificial version of the Echo. Created by the Garlean Empire, resonants can manipulate the power of the aether to detect minor changes in it to predict and avoid incoming attacks. The Resonant project was developed by the Garlean scientist Aulus mal Asina to overcome his people's natural inability to use magic.
Background[]
Garlean Purebloods tend to, though not always, be naturally physically powerful, and their third eye gives them increased spatial awareness. Despite this, they lack the hereditary traits required to manipulate aether, making it impossible for them to use magicks without outside assistance. Because of this they suffered decades of oppression by other, magically capable races, and were driven to seek shelter in the cold northern region of Ilsabard. The region's vast deposits of ceruleum led Garleans into developing magitek: a revolutionary technology conceived to compensate for their disadvantage.
Though magitek made Garlemald a world power, Aulus mal Asina saw it as a temporary solution to an intrinsic problem, which he believed could be solved by manipulating the Garlean genomes. Inspiration was found in Gaius Baelsar's journal, which contained details of the Echo: the power to manipulate aether. Aulus began his research with funding by Zenos yae Galvus, who went through the perfected process after using the Ala Mhigan Fordola rem Lupis to test the experiment. After seeing its worth in battle, Zenos himself became resonant. To imbue someone with a Resonant, the aether of a large number of people must be drained and then reshaped using the template created from the aether of someone with an Echo, and then implanted into the recipient. Receiving a Resonant, in general, makes someone immune to tempering, much like someone with an Echo.
Fordola was the first to receive a Resonant and became the trial subject of Aulus's experiment. The Resonant allowed Fordola to foresee incoming attacks, enabling her to counter or avoid them. She was initially unable to control the Resonant's ability to let her experience the emotions of the people around her. This tortured Fordola and possibly contributed to her regret for joining the Empire.
Zenos's resonance allowed him to merge into primals and control them, and to cheat death like an Ascian. By the time Zenos retrieved his body from Elidibus, he had gained mastery over his Resonant abilities, such as being able to project magical barriers and teleport, becoming an Ascian in all but name.
Misija Votyasch would later become Resonant using techniques employed by Aulus in an attempt to channel the elder primal Gunnhildr through the legendary blade Save the Queen, eventually doing so in the ancient Bozjan palace Delubrum Reginae.

Gameplay[]
When battling Fordola during the quest The Resonant, she will start the battle with the Resonant status. While the status is active Fordola will gain perfect evasion, causing all attacks against her to miss. Using the Aetheric Siphon duty action will dispel the status, allowing the player to damage her, but she will occasionally regain it, forcing the player to use the Siphon again.
