Restore one ally's HP over time.
Description
Regen is a White Magicks spell in Final Fantasy XII, both in the original PlayStation 2 version as well as the Zodiac re-releases. It is a single-target status enhancement spell that makes one target accumulate HP passively. It can also be used to heal Sap status.
Obtained[]
Regen's license costs 50 License Points in the Zodiac versions, where the spell is found in rainy Giza Plains' Nomad Village cockatrice pen. It begins to rain in Giza after the events in the Tomb of Raithwall. If not picked up in Giza, Regen is also found in Tchita Uplands' The Lost Way, near the middle of the area, on the right side of the dividing part of terrain.
In the original version, Regen's license costs 35 LP and the spell is bought for 1900 gil from Dyce after defeating the second Demon Wall in the Tomb of Raithwall, Rabanastre after defeating Belias, and Eruyt Village and Mt Bur-Omisace.
In the Zodiac versions, Regen is used by White Mage, Red Battlemage, and Knight with the Mateus license.
Mechanics[]
Regen temporarily bestows the status of the same name that gradually and continuously restores HP, and is the reverse effect of Sap. It is unaffected by Reverse. The amount increased is a random amount from 1 to the affected's level every 1.5 seconds. Regen is removed with Dispel.
The formula for the duration is:
If the status lasted around 90 seconds, one casting of Regen would restore ~600 HP to a level 20 party member.
The duration depends on the receiver's Vitality stat, not the caster's. Haste and Slow do not affect the length other status effects will last, but Stop will halt them.
Regen costs 16 MP to cast without Channeling licenses. The spell will bounce from Reflect unless the caster wears the Opal Ring.
Use[]
Regen is a status enhancement spell the player can easily set up via the gambit system (such as with Ally status:Sap→Regen). Instead of using the spell, the player can also set it up by hitting allies with the Healing Rod weapon, and with equipping Ring of Renewal accessory or the Renewing Morion light armor hat. In the Zodiac versions, Ribbon also grants Regen as well as Libra.
The status heals more the higher the player's level, meaning it is nigh useless in a New Game Minus playthrough. It may be more useful as a status healing spell to counter Sap (placed above Esuna gambits) to get a little bonus on top of healing Sap, than just for the HP accumulation, as curative spells and items are usually better to keep the party out of harm's way. A good time to use Regen is right outside a boss room or before another tough encounter, like a hunt mark.
Regen can be cast by Wyrdhare, Mu, Gargoyle Baron, Atomos, Yiazmat, Molen, and Rook. When enemies use it on themselves, or spawn with the status already in place, the player is best dispelling it.
