Gradually restores HP.
Description
Regen is a Wht Mag spell in Final Fantasy IX for Eiko, used to bestow the status of the same name that restores the affected's HP, or damages them if they are undead. Regen is vulnerable to Reflect and would work with Return Magic were enemies to use it on the player party.
Obtained[]
Eiko learns Regen from Fairy Flute and Fairy Earrings for 25 AP. The earliest she can learn is from the Fairy Earrings, found in the Fossil Roo before the party even meets Eiko.
Mechanics[]
Regen bestows the Regen status to one target at the cost of 14 MP, which restores 1/16th of the unit's maximum HP per tick. The better Spirit stat the target has, the longer Regen lasts and the more often it heals. Mechanics wise, the same calculation that is used for the rate ATB gauges fill is used for calculating status duration and tick frequency.
- Status duration = Spirit * 360
- Heal frequency = (60 - Spirit) * 40
Both the status duration and the tick frequency also take into account Battle Speed as set in the Config, as well as the unit's speed status (Stop, Slow, Normal, Haste). Regen ticks exactly every 2 seconds at 50 Spirit at the fastest battle speed.
On an undead unit, the effect is reversed and they take damage every tick instead.
The support ability that affects Regen is Reflect-Null, which allows Regen to pierce target's Reflect.
In Eiko's Trance, Wht Mag turns into Dbl Wht where Eiko can cast two spells on her turn. The spells cost MP and expend the Trance gauge independently.
Use[]
Regen is a status enhancement that has the possibility of making all other kinds of mid-battle heals obsolete. It is only removed by Dispel and being defeated by KO or Petrify. However, the spell is not the only or the best way to bestow the effect: Freya's Reis's Wind gives the status to the whole party at once, Amarant's Aura bestows both Regen and Auto-Life to one target (or all while he is in Trance), and Auto-Regen bestows automatic Regen status to the wearer that cannot wear off, usually making all other types of healing unnecessary.
With Regen, it is dangerous for that character to get Zombie, so one should be ready with a Magic Tag against enemies that use this ailment. In the same vein, Regen could be cast onto undead enemies to damage them over time, but it is less potent than simply using Eiko's curative spells for this purpose, as healing spells against the undead tend to be strong, disregarding their Magic Defense.
