Final Fantasy Wiki

The unit is enveloped in a reflective barrier that bounces magicks back at the caster.

Description (The War of the Lions)

Reflect is a status in Final Fantasy Tactics. Magicks marked with ☇ are reflected, with the target tile changing from the target to a tile in the same position as if the target were casting that spell. It lasts for 32 clock ticks, unless the effect is from wearing "Auto-Reflect" equipment.

Mechanics[]

Auto-Reflect equipment prevents the wearer from being revived by Raise spells, because spells are reflected even while the unit is knocked out.

When a spell is reflected, it is not reflected back at the user. Rather, the spell bounces to the square in the same distance and direction as it was originally cast. So, if one casts a spell 2 squares directly ahead, and the target has reflect, then the spell will land on the square two more away from the original target.

Magick which can be reflected is indicated by ☇ in the menu of the original and War of The Lions versions, or under the Magickal Effects heading of the spell in The Ivalice Chronicles. Magick cast by Arithmeticks, a weapon, or already bounced once will not be reflected. Magick will be voided when a caster with the Reflect status casts a spell on themselves. The game's enemy A.I. also knows to avoid or take advantage of the magick that is going to be reflected.

In the example 3, since the target does not have the Reflect status, he will receive the magick within area of effect twice.

Abilities[]

"Auto-Reflect" accessory Envoûtement, Reflect Ring
"Auto-Reflect" armor Mirror Mail
Spell Carbuncle (Summon), Reflect (Time Magick)

There is also a dummied reaction ability found in the game data. This incomplete ability has no effect. Its name and description suggest it would probably have granted the Reflect status to the unit if it was hit by magick.

Use[]

Reflect can be used as an early game interrupt after certain magick starts being cast due to its 50 speed, or used for positioning for magick cast on a group as a type of Dualcast if the caster is 1 or 2 spaces behind the targeted ally, who is the same distance in front of an enemy with this status. The magick will hit the enemy, bounce off the ally with reflect, and strike again, hopefully where the enemy was if the positioning is correct. Summoners (who can similarly bestow reflect with Carbuncle) and special categories will bypass this.

The late game allows fast characters with good movement like Balthier or Orlandeau to use equipment and their positioning (and high HP) to be lightning rods, which reflected spells will go above their normal height.
