Reflect is a status in Final Fantasy VII that bounces magic back to the caster for up to four times. Spells bounced off Reflect will continuously bounce back and forth between the targets if they both have Reflect up, until a target's Reflect status runs out after four hits. With Auto-Reflect (Reflect Ring and the enemy Mirage), the spell is bounced only once. The spell is reflected either back to the caster, or to a random member of the opposing party if an ally reflects a spell off an ally.

Affected spells[]

There are many spells that cannot be reflected; summons and spells cast from items cannot be reflected.

The following spells cannot be reflected:

Berserk and Confu can only be reflected if the enemy is vulnerable to the statuses they inflict; against enemies that are immune, the spells will not reflect.

Glitches[]

If the player casts Reflect on all enemies and all party members, and then applies Resist status on them all, and tries to cast a spell to a target, the game will freeze. Casting Pandora's Box on Proud Clod at the Battle Square with a party member and the enemy both having Reflect can result in an infinite loop reflecting back and forth between the party and the enemy.

If Cloud casts Barrier, MBarrier, or Wall on himself while under the Reflect status, he will leap forward as per usual, but his casting animation will be cut short and he will not move back. This can be done repeatedly to push him off screen, and he will eventually circle around the battlefield back to the default position if done enough times. If he attacks or gets attacked, unless the attack misses or he gets knocked out, his position resets to normal. The camera can still pan towards Cloud's position when he casts, and both he and any enemies can attack each other like normal regardless of his position. Damage numbers will still appear on screen. Since casting Reflect on Cloud resets his position, the Reflect Ring is mandatory.

Use[]

Reflect is a moderately useful status, as not many enemies use magic attacks and the Reflect spell is obtained relatively late. The player may farm for Mirrors from Mirage, although it is a rare item. If the player wishes to use Reflect, it is advised to use Reflect Ring so as to keep Reflect without it expiring. Reflect Ring can be very useful for the final boss who use reflectable spells, although the player will have to deal with statuses in the final battle if they forgo equipping Ribbons.
