Places a barrier around the target that reflects magic back at its caster.
Description
Reflect is an Effect spell in Final Fantasy VI. It grants the reflect effect to a target, which bounces most targeted magic against the opposing party. The spell is taught by magicite.
Reflect is also an enemy ability used by Curlax, Gold Dragon, Laragorn, Level 30 Magic, Magic, Moebius, Clymenus, Kaiser Dragon, Zurvan, Soul Saver, Flame Eater, and Shiva.
Obtained[]
Reflect is only taught by the Carbuncle magicite at a rate of x5.
Mechanics[]
Reflect is affected by Runic and by an existing reflect status (meaning casting Reflect on a target with reflect already will cause it to bounce off to the opposing party).
The player can deliberately cast a spell on a party member with reflect to bounce it back onto the enemy. This will only ever bounce one way, meaning if the enemy also has reflect, it will only bounce from the player's party member once to then hit the enemy successfully.
Use[]
Reflect is a potentially useful spell in a variety of situations, but harmful in others. A party member reflecting targeted spells onto the enemy will receive far fewer offensive spells that could harm them, but will also reflect curative spells and heal the enemy. The only way around this is to cast Reflect onto the enemy to then cast onto the enemy and bounce onto the party, or use alternative means of healing.
Most offensive spells cast against a party member will reflect onto the enemy, which both shields them from a large source of damage, and harms the enemy in the process (assuming the enemy does not absorb an element of the attack being reflected). Non-targeted spells, or ones that pierce reflect, will still deal damage.
Reflect can potentially shield a party member more than Shell (which halves all magic damage) or shield them less, depending on what kind of spells the opponent casts. Shell is more consistent in its effect, but in certain circumstances, Reflect provides better protection. For physical damage, Protect and Vanish can be used.
Because the Reflect spell is not improved or weakened by the caster's stats, it can be taught to and used by any party member. In fact, it may be better for non-spellcaster party members to use Reflect on their allies, allowing spellcasters to preserve their MP for offensive or healing spells where their MP is more important.
As an alternative to casting Reflect, equipping the Reflect Ring causes a party member to have reflect by default, and summoning Carbuncle bestows Reflect to all of the party at once.
