Nullifies Reflect and attacks.

Description

Reflect-Null is a support ability in Final Fantasy IX for mages that allows their black and white magic to bypass a target's Reflect status. Reflect-Null costs 7 Magic Stones to activate. Despite the in-game flavor text, the ability is much more useful supportively than offensively, due to how few enemies have Reflect.

Obtained[]

Reflect-Null is learned from Robe of Lords and Pearl Rouge for variable amounts of AP; Vivi learns it the fastest at 30 AP, where Eiko takes the longest at 55 AP. Wearing both equipment pieces at the same time masters the ability at double the pace.

Pearl Rouge for Dagger and Eiko can first be bought from the Treno Auction House when Princess Garnet and Captain Steiner visit there with Marcus, though the player may not have the funds for it then. It can also be synthesized in synthesis shops after the party returns from the Outer Continent.

Robe of Lords for all three characters is the ultimate robe, first available as the top prize in Mene's Chocobo Hot and Cold rewards shop, but it would take excess grinding to purchase there. It can also be stolen from superbosses, synthesized in Hades's synthesis shop, and obtained as a reward for giving 12 Stellazzio coins to Queen Stella.

Mechanics[]

With Reflect-Null equipped, the character's black or white magic spells that usually bounce off Reflect, bypass Reflect and hit the target of the spell.

Use[]

Reflect-Null is useful on Dagger and Eiko for using healing spells when the party has Reflect, often from Auto-Reflect. This is especially beneficial in the battle against Ozma where Reflect is the only protection available against the boss's Berserk.

Reflect-Null is less useful on Vivi. He can only learn it from the Robe of Lords, which is obtained very late into the game, and likely he will not want to bypass Reflect due to his Reflectx2. The enemies who use Reflect onto themselves are few and far between, and against them, Vivi could still use Reflectx2 and bounce spells off the party, or use spells that bypass Reflect naturally: Comet, Meteor, and Doomsday.
