Red XIII (Final Fantasy VII party member)

Red XIII is a playable jack-of-all-trades type character in Final Fantasy VII. He does not wield a weapon on-screen, but can be equipped with different head adornments in his weapon slot. He is faster than the other party members.

Red XIII joins the party in the Shinra Building. He is initially known as Red (レッドXIII, Reddo Sātīn?) for a single dialogue before his character naming screen appears.

Battle[]

Like Cloud, Red XIII is a well-rounded character good at both physical attacks and casting magic. His victory pose is to scratch himself behind an ear, then stand up on his hind legs. His victory pose loops.

Stats[]

Red XIII has the highest Speed stat. His lowest stat is his MP.

Equipment[]

Red XIII's initial weapon "Mythril Clip".

Red XIII joins the party with the Mythril Clip equipped. The weapon has three Materia slots, two of which are linked, and he holds the Fire, All, and Sense Materia initially. Red XIII uses various hairclips, decorative combs, and other "headdresses" to enhance his fighting abilities, but unlike with other characters, his weapon is not rendered on his battle model. His weapons have decent power and many boost his Magic stat.

Seraph Comb is obtained after the Cave of the Gi in "In the Land of the Study of Planet Life". With 68 battle power, it is the strongest weapon in the game up until that point, and most other characters do not acquire weapons of equal power until "Within the Temple of the Ancients" and after. Red XIII is also the only close-range character to acquire a long-range weapon, the Hairpin.

His ultimate weapon, the Limited Moon, does more damage the fuller his MP gauge is.

Limit Breaks[]

Red XIII's lower-level Limit Breaks involve boosting his stats, particularly through Haste, which augments his speed. His later Limit Breaks hit multiple enemies, and his ultimate Limit Break, Cosmo Memory, hits all enemies for 8x damage, allowing it to easily do 9,999 damage even at low levels. Though not as powerful as other characters' Limits that hit multiple times, Red's ultimate Limit can be obtained early on in the game.

Quests[]

Red XIII joins the party at the end of "Storming the Shinra Building", in the battle against Sample:H0512 until the party reaches the elevator. He is next in the party with Aeris as they ride the elevator and face a boss there. After this, he can be placed into the party lineup as the player wishes.

When the party reaches Cosmo Canyon, Red XIII exits the party entirely. He rejoins the party and is locked into the active party for the Cave of the Gi events in "In the Land of the Study of Planet Life", and returns to being a normal member after.

Going to Geisel Bugenhagen's room with Red XIII in the party after "Mako Cannon Rampage" triggers a scene where Red he acquires the Limited Moon weapon.

Interactions[]

If Red XIII is in the party during the scene with Hojo on the Costa del Sol beach during "Dangerous Voyage", he will become angered when Hojo does not respond to the accusation he is hiding something, and then collapse from the heat due to his fur making him too hot. If he is not in the party when first visiting Costa del Sol, he is found lying in the shade of a building near some kids playing soccer, batting the ball to them with his tail. If Cloud kicks the ball at him, he will bark at him, and then growl if Cloud talks to him. In addition, one of the two kids playing with him will comment that he (referring to him as "that big dog") talks like a human and say that it is cool, before then saying that it is also weird.

Speaking with the watchman and the girl in Nanaki's Room with Red XIII in the party consistently yields different dialogue.

Red XIII's dialogue to some of the optional scenarios is different before and after the Cosmo Canyon events to reflect his newfound mindset. When Yuffie steals the party's money when the player fails to recruit her, before the Cosmo Canyon events Red XIII responds "Greed... A perfect example of human nature," but after Cosmo Canyon he will say, "Give... give back what is rightfully mine!"

If the party fails the Underwater Reactor Huge Materia quest, when getting the red submarine, if the player dognaps the dog with Red XIII in the party, Red XIII will howl.
