Red Mage is a job in Final Fantasy XIV, introduced in the Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood expansion. Red Mage does not have a base class, and starts at level 50. They are classed as magical ranged DPS.

Due to the game following the traditional MMO trinity, the Final Fantasy XIV incarnation of Red Mage only has access to two basic restorative spells: Vercure and Verraise. Despite this, they remain the offensive job best suited for emergency healing and (via Dualcast) the best job overall for reviving incapacitated allies.

Profile[]

On the eastern edge of Abalathia's Spine lies the mountainous region of Gyr Abania.

It is in these elevated lands that people took shelter, when a burning star guided them away from the Sixth Umbral Calamity's treacherous floodwaters. The survivors gathered from near and far, and amongst them were refugees of the sorcerous cities of Mhach and Amdapor.

These sworn enemies buried their history for the sake of the future, and cast aside their vestments of black and white. Upon the remnants of their arts a new discipline was built, and the first red mages stepped forward with rapiers in hand to fight back against the rising tides of destruction.

Lodestone

Red Mage is a hybrid of ranged magical/melee DPS achieved via high-speed movements and precise positioning. In battle, Red Mages use rapiers for melee strikes and Red Magic for ranged attacks. They deal massive damage by linking multiple spells with Dualcast and following them up with melee attacks. They also function as an emergency Healers of sorts, with healing spells and revives that are assisted by Dualcast. Beginning in Stormblood, Alisaie Leveilleur upgrades her job to Red Mage.

Story[]

The Warrior of Light meets X'rhun Tia, the Red Mage Jobmaster at Ul'dah. He asks them if they're interested in Red Magic and he means to demonstrate his abilities in Camp Drybone. Instead they're ambushed by a group of assassins. Thrusting the Red Mage soul crystal to the Warrior, they face the assassins and emerge victorious.

Equipment[]

An elezen red mage with the Aeneas and Estoqueur's artifact armor.

Red mages wield rapiers as their weapons alongside a magical focus, which they can combine with the blade to form a staff for their spells. Their armor is primarily made up of "Casting" gear, armor with low physical defense and high magic defense that they share with other magical DPS classes.

The primary attribute for red mages is intelligence, which boosts their attack magic potency, and should always be prioritized over other attributes. As a DPS discipline, they draw the most benefit from the critical hit, direct hit, spell speed, and determination secondary attributes, which all improve their damage dealing capabilities in some way.

More White Mana

The Job Gauge was introduced to players in 4.0 Stormblood. The Red Mage uses the Balance Gauge.

The Job Gauge indicates the current amount of the two types of mana, White and Black (shown in the gauge as blue). Job actions associated with white magic such as Veraero and Verstone will add white mana to the left side of the gauge, while actions associated with black magic such as Verthunder and Verfire will add black mana to the gauge. There are multiple actions that will add a specific amount of both. The goal is to keep the mana balanced as it rises up the gauge.

If one type of mana grows faster than the other, the gauge becomes difficult to balance out and players will not be able to use enchanted versions of the Riposte, Zwerchhau, Redoublement, or Moulinet melee weaponskills until the gauge is back in balance. Once enchanted, these skill deal additional damage and have reduced recast times. As long as the gauge stays properly balanced and above 30 points of mana, the crystal at the top will be red; if unbalanced, the crystal will have the color of the higher mana type. Using the enchanted weaponskills will remove mana from the gauge, starting the cycle over.
