Red Giant is an optional boss in Final Fantasy VIII found in Ultimecia Castle and summoned when the player enters the Prison Cell in the Armory and retrieves the Prison Key. It is fought to unlock one of the party's sealed abilities. It is a red version of the Iron Giant with such strong defenses it under normal conditions takes barely any damage and berates the party for it. In the localized versions, Pandemona can be drawn from Red Giant if the player did not draw it from Fujin earlier.

Stats

Battle

Red Giant has high Vitality and Spirit, which can be nulled with Vit 0 from Meltdown or Doomtrain. One of the boss's more amusing traits is that it gives a verbal response to attacks done on him.

When attacking him with a physical attack, the Red Giant will say:

"GWahaHA! PHysical attacKS? USeleSS!"

Inflicted with magic, the Red Giant will say:

"THat magic is useleSS!"

Inflicted with Demi, the Red Giant will say:

"Urgh! N-NO more DEMI, pleaSE...!!!"

Attacked by a GF, the Red Giant will say (even if the player used Cactuar that does fixed damage):

"THat GF is a waste of tiME!"

Attacked by Diablos, the Red Giant will say:

"Diablos?!... DeFeAt is ImMinent!"

Red Giant attacks with its Gigantic Sword, but once its HP is reduced to around 9,000 HP or below, it abandons the sword to fight with its bare hands, using the Punch attack. Red Giant's sword attack is hindered if inflicted with Darkness, but its Punch attacks will always hit.

Strategy

Using Demi against Red Giant from FFVIII Remastered

Using Demi against Red Giant.

Demi magic and summoning Diablos, Cactuar or Bahamut work well. The player can summon Cerberus to triple-cast Demi, or draw-cast it from the boss itself; as Demi deals fractional damage, its power is not hampered by draw-casting as with most spells.

Quistis's Micro Missiles and Zell's Meteor Strike deal good damage, but the best Limit Break is Irvine's Shot with AP Ammo, as its armor pierce negates Red Giant's Vit and Spr and deals direct damage by the thousands.

Inflicting Vit 0 onto the boss renders the boss weak to physical attacks, and the player can then simply defeat it outright. Kamikaze may destroy it in one use, albeit at the cost of its user.

The player can protect the party from the boss's attacks with Protect and good Vitality junctions. The player can also put the sturdiest character to the middle position of the party formation and give them Cover.

Triple Triad

TTRedGiant

Red Giant is a Level 7 Boss Card in Triple Triad used for playing the minigame and for turning into five Meteor Stones with Quezacotl's Card Mod. Red Giant is a rare outcome from successfully using the Card command on a Chimera or a Forbidden.
